The accommodation at Gariep Dam is excellent. We stayed in one of the houses which was well appointed and very clean. The resort is well situated with views of the San and is well maintained. An excellent place for a stop over or for a longer visit.

Based on the reviews here I was expecting an average stage and only chose to stay here because my husband had insisted since he had childhood memories of the resort. From our first moment at reception right until the moment we left I was pleasantly surprised. Reception staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful.
The Resort grounds are very well looked after and I was impressed to see how clean and well tended they were. The camp sites are stunning and right along the water's edge, although I do note previous points about there only being one abolition block. We stayed in the self catering chalets and found them to be very good value for money (especially for a family). The kitchen is well equipped with all utensils, crockery and cutlery that you need. Despite being a "self catering" unit, they have been kind enough to provide basic tea and coffee supplies, which is great for guests stopping over who don't want to bring their own.

Note: the restaurant is no longer the expensive buffet that many people complained about in previous posts. They now have a very well priced a la carte menu, although we did not eat there.

All in all we were very impressed at the quality and standard of the accommodation and the facilities. There are lovely pools, tennis courts and other facilities which make this an ideal place for families with children. We loved our stop there and would highly recommend it!

Do not be put off by my score of 3. Forever Resort Gariep is a stunning resort but it needs maintenance.
I booked for 10 people - three couples in a double story 6-sleeping bungalow and two couples each on their own caravan site. The bungalow would have been great were it not for the maintenance problems - the doors didn't close properly, taps were leaky and the cleaning staff didn't always do a good job. It depended on who was on duty.
Not having been to this resort before I booked the luxury camping sites. If you want to enjoy the view don't do this. We ended up abandoning the luxury for the more pleasant regular camp site. The only advantage of the luxury site is that you have your own private bathroom and wash-up facility - not worth sacrificing the view for. The caravan park is delightful. There is plenty of well-kept lawn and shady trees. It was also clean, the bins were emptied daily and the braai kept tidy. The ablutions looked beautiful but toilet seats were loose and taps were leaky. The Lady's facility had more baths than showers. The showers of which there were only two were small and the hook in the one was missing. There were towel rails and the shower worked well. The facility was kept clean but they on one of the days the paper towel ran out and even though we reminded the staff to replace it, it didn't happen for 24 hours.
Our stay was for five days. It was a family reunion and we thoroughly enjoyed it. As it was during the week and off season it was a perfect spot for us to gather. We enjoyed the tranquility, the bird life and even the vervet monkeys. Do beware, though, they can be a nuisance. Keep food well locked away and be vigilant when cooking and eating outdoors.'
Forever Gariep is a beautiful venue. A lot has been done to make it look attractive. The rondavels are set on a higher ground and have a view of the dam but it is interrupted by the beautiful trees. You couldn't ask for a more stunning campsite and the fishing in the dam was productive. My husband was happy to catch and release several yellow fish.
In spite of the negatives I would highly recommend this as a place to spend a few chill out days.

We arrived pretty late and had not booked, but were offered a camping spot with private ablution facilities. Pitching 3 tens on a relatively small patch of grass at an angle was no real problem. The private facilities consisted of a really tiny kitchen, bath with shower and a toilet. Supper at the restaurant was great with really friendly staff.
The only negative was that the camping spot was at an intersection and offered no privacy.

Dear Henri N,

Thank you for the review and for stopping at Gariep.

We can be quite busy and the vehicles can sometimes disturb the peace in the area but being between the nature and right next to S.A.'s biggest dam makes it all worth the stop.

We hope to see you again in your travels.

Our family of 6x stayed in one of their self-catering chalets on an overnight stay on our way to Kruger. Whilst it is by no means terrible, it did not quite meet our expectations. We usually stay at the De Stihl hotel on the hill and feel it offers more value for money.

Overall the unit was quite neat and clean with all the basics. I cannot believe that the rooms do not have air conditioners or at the very least some type of fan. It can get really hot in this part of the world. I struggled to sleep that night due to the heat and there was not even a fan. There was a air conditioner in the lounge area but this did not help.

The unit is quite spacious...however the layout was a bit odd. The unit had a few maintenance issues (i.e. some doors struggled to close and lock properly). Although the premises was green with nice views, we found quite a lot of beer bottles etc lying around which was not welcoming site.

We had dinner in the restaurant (they only offer buffet). I must say for the price paid (about R160 per person) it was very basic and the food was not great at all. Although we were only 4 tables for the night the service was slow and dis organised. We also had a very unfriendly welcoming when we arrived..with the waiters clearly not happy to see us.

I am sure for campers or people wanting a very basic self-catering stay Forever Resort Gariep is perfect. However if you are just passing through and only looking for an overnight stay i think there are better value for money options available.
