Recommended for seeing Elephants, Zebra and Antelope not so much for Lions, Leopards, Cape Buffalo. River Bend is good

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 24 Jan 2023via mobile
Beautiful older Lodge near Addo Elephant National Park’s Main Camp( Northern Gate)
River Bend offers safari’s with their own guides within their “private portion of Addo National Park.
We did an early morning drive and a night drive with their Safari leader Leo. Leo is a new guide and gaining experience. He is very knowledgeable and wants to help you learn . The night drive is highly recommended, you’ll see many different animals than u see on the day drives.
You can also go to the Main Addo Camp about a 20 minute drive and either do self drives or do guided safari’s with Addo staff or possibly with River Bend staff. We like doing self drives so that’s what we did in Addo. We saw lions on River Bends area but none of the black Rhino’s in either area.
The food was interesting at River Bend , it is a Continental cuisine. Was well done.
The staff was very friendly with their aim to ensure you have a good stay.
We had the honeymoon suite which had a pool but the water was too cool for us , which was the same for the beautiful main pool.
The Lodge has beautiful lounging areas and a classic bar area.
The drinks and wine are very , very reasonably priced.
The lodge was very safe and clean and well kept. The landscaping is remarkable.
We were able to see ( once each) lions and elephants from our Villa and the lodge. The lodge offers indoor and outdoor dining which was basically bug free any very pleasant.
The negatives were the WiFi was just ok, and was totally out during the 8 hrs / day of load shedding. The other negative is that the lodge while it does have a generator doesn’t have the rooms powered by the generator. This means 8 hrs a day ,4 hrs in morning and 4 hrs in evening you’ll have no power in your room for anything including air conditioning. Also twice we woke up without any running water in the morning, this lasted for hours.
We recommend River Bend. Addo is a place to see Elephants, Antelope (many breeds), Zebra, warthogs. It is very difficult to see Rhino, Leopards and Lions in Addo. Better to go to Kruger in our opinion to see the big 5.
Date of stay: January 2023
Room Tip: Load shedding is not well handled at River Bend and last 8 hrs each day. If u want to see the...

Dear David C

Thank you for taking the time to put pen to paper and to write your review.

I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us at RiverBend Lodge, and yes you were lucky to see the black rhino, as well as the lion. I have been to Kruger and many times never saw a rhino or a lion, it all depends on the day and your luck at the time, but the best of it all is that we are also further away and don't have any Malaria here. A big plus.

Yes, unfortunately with the load shedding that the Government has implemented, over which we have no control, we have at times experienced, and obviously while you were here, 4 hour load shedding sessions, thank goodness that was only for a week and we are back down to 1 hour and at times 2 hour sessions. But the good news is that we are in discussions with regards to solar, and to going off the grid. Cannot wait.

Wishing you a wonderful year of travel.

Sincerely

Debbie & The RiverBend Lodge Team

For us it was e very nice experience, to see the animals in the nature. The guide gave us a lot of interesting information about the behaviour of the animals and about the plants. Food and living were exclusive and we were spoiled by the whole staff. A beautiful place to enjoy. Thank you very mach.

My family and I got to participate in a birding package at River Bend Lodge in October 2022. It was an incredible opportunity to share our passion for birding with likeminded people, and we jumped to do it. This was our first time in the Inyati section of Addo, and our first time at River Bend Lodge - WOW!!! We were blown away by the literal Oasis in Addo. The Lodge itself is fabulous, a garden oasis full of birds and well laid out with walkways, bird baths, garden and pool that the kids loved. The Food was simply amazing, and the lodge manager and staff literally go out of their way to ensure you are well taken care of. The lodge has three rangers who are an absolutely near perfect team, complimenting each others skills and forming a formidable set of expertise that ensure you get the most out of your game drives.

We would highly recommend spending some time at River Bend Lodge!

    Dear MarkBrownSA,

Thank you so very much for your wonderful review.

We are so delighted that you and your family had a great stay with us. Tis Nyati section is a true gem for Birders as we cover over 5 biomes within our private concession, and as you say the bird life is phenomenal, and inbetewwn the birding are the Big 5 sightings that are always a thrill.

Again, Thank you so much for your time and for your review, I will pass on your comments to the Team.

    Sincerely

What a wonderful experience we had during the annual birding week!
Safaris were very good, the food was very tasty and the service and staff were welcoming, warm and professional!! Staff deserves a 5/5!
The talks during the week included experts from Addo and an Ornithologist! We learnt so much. The practical bird ringing experience was our highlight!
    Thank you Riverbend lodge!
P.S. The only reason why I gave 4/5 and not 5/5 was because the towels were very old and tatty and the Safari vehicles can do with rain protection.

    Dear MOSLang,

Thank you so much for your review and for taking the time to do it.

We are delighted that you had a wonderful stay with us, and we are delighted that our birding getaway is now becoming an annual event.

I understand and accept your reasoning behind the 4/5, and am very happy to say we are in the process of ordering our new linen and towels, I cannot wait for them to arrive. COVID really delayed a whole lot of spending.

Then with regards to the vehicles and the canvas roof, at the moment 2 of them do have the roofing but when driving on our Private concession side the busy is so dense that the covers do create a limit on where we can drive with them on, however even having said that I must mention that 2 of our vehicles are off site and have been with a company for the past 4 months, who is also refurbing our vehicles for us as, and they will all have removable canvas roof covers and new everything else from chairs to storage boxes.

Again, thank you for taking the time to write an open and constructive review.

    Sincerely,

Debbie & The RiverBend Lodge Team

Second visit here with my brother and another fabulous time. Staff are excellent and can't do enough for you. Always asking if you would like a drink or a snack, they were very disappointed when we didn't want lunch as we'd had too much for breakfast! The chef comes to discuss the evening menu, we had a choice of fish, meat or veggie option both nights. Breakfast overlooking the waterhole both mornings and evening meals by a lovely log fire.
On Game drives they will do their utmost to do what you want, we had some concentrating on birds and also trying to find an elusive lion. We were so lucky last time with lion sightings but not this visit....... We were extremely lucky with other sightings though! Game drives include sundowner drinks or morning hot drinks both with delicious freshly made snacks. Greeted on return to the lodge with hot towels and a further drink in the evening. Game guide is in contact with the lodge with an eta so meals are ready on arrival. For early morning drives your guide delivers tea and a snack to the room.
Rooms are spacious with everything you need, including further snacks and drinks, fruit and water, chocolates for the evening.
We have already booked our next visit for January 23.

RiverBend Lodge was a great place to stay. The staff was friendly and the food was so good. Debbie the manager took care of all of our needs and went beyond. Christiaan our guide made all of our game drives fun and exciting. It is great to have a guide that gets as excited as you do to see the birds, lions, and brown Hyena. Thanks everyone for making our stay so great!

    Dear Carefreebirder,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a super review. This is truly how we keep a finger on the pulse of the most important aspect of RiverBend Lodge, You our GUEST.

Well, as you discovered we are certainly also a birders paradise, over and above the Big 5, and all the other little creatures that matter just as much, which I know Christiaan would have shared with you.

I have been here now for 4 years and I have seen the brown hyena twice, you were so very lucky,....(mmmm maybe I can also give Chris 50% credit for being as you say such a wonderful guide.)

Do take care and we wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Christmas (just around the corner) and may the New Year be kind to us all.

    Sincerey
