I spent 1 day at El Copal Reserve and it was incredible, the food, birds, the building; everything was very nice. I'll definitely recommend this place, and I'll spent more time with my family there.

We were there for 2 days of birding, staying 2 nights. With a beatiful balcony looking over the majestic valley and with birds everywhere. Especially the stunning Snowcap! Our guide Christhian took us for more than a full day into the trails he knows by heart. He knows every sound, every bird and where to find it. This was real rural Costa Rica with at night only the lights of of fire flies glittering. We had lunch and dinner at the lodge's restaurant "La Cotinga"and, although sober, it tasted delicious. Our hosts Patricia and Berto were very friendly and although they spoke Spanish and we didn't we had nice conversations and laughed a lot. Don't expect televison (there is wifi) but just enjoy the beauty of nature and the pleasure of tranquil peace. It was hard to get there (the last km's not a real road) but Thanks for everything!

I spent two nights at El Copal Reserve and it was the best birding of the whole trip. Having birds like Snowcap from the porch and then getting Dull-mantled Antbird, Lancebill, and Ochre-breasted Antpitta on the trails was incredible. When it came time to leave, great bird after great bird continued to show up delaying our schedule.

The accommodations are basic but good. You'll need some basic Spanish to communicate and a four-wheel drive vehicle to get there but it's well worth it!

My wife and I were lucky enough to get El Copal on our radar and visit last week. The hosts Patricia who brings the great cuisine of Guanacaste and Beto the bird whisperer were the most gracious people we have met in years. It is rustic and simple and a beautiful setting in this most important project to preserve primary forest and educate and train coming generations in sustainable living. The birds from the porch are great and the trails into the forest are enlightening. You will want to have at least some rudimentary Spanish to visit as well as 4 wheel drive for the last part of the drive in. It will be more than worth it!

Wonderful remote location with great hiking trails. Owner spent time sharing knowledge of the development of this eco-reserve. Basic accommodation, very clean, friendly and great food.
