“Easy hike and beautful falls!”

Morrell Falls National Recreation Trail
Reviewed 26 May 2016

My first time doing this hike and it's a nice walk through the woods. The falls were beautiful. The hike to the top of the falls is strenuous and good if you're looking for a little more challenge than the hike in.

I grew up about an hour and a half away from this hike. We went on this hike almost once a year growing up. The trailhead is pretty easy to find, the last couple of miles are on a dirt road. It is a few miles long, but most of it is not very steep. We did it as little kids and I still love it as an adult. There are little bodies of water along the trail that sometimes have wildlife in them such as turtles, various waterfowl, and we have even seen a moose along the way! The falls are not huge, but very beautiful and often the creek itself is not too deep. There are often little frogs living in the creek! Some years the beargrass is in bloom ALL OVER the place! It's great! We would often take a picnic lunch and eat once we got up to the falls. You can also go to the top of the falls to look down, that little trail is much steeper. We often find thimble berries along the trail and sometimes huckleberries. One of my all time favorite hikes!

There is usually plenty of parking space. The bathroom facilities are basic - just a couple of outhouses.

Although very hot the hike was not too bad. Falls were impressive and very photogenic...also cool enough to chill the hiker's feet.

A fairly easy three mile (one way) hike finds you in a special place, found enchanting by many. Maybe it is Montana's answer to the energy vortex of Sedona? A few climb to the top of the lower falls, but only a minute percentage of visitors clamber to the upper falls. Exploring farther up into Grizzly Basin is as wild as any wilderness in the lower 48.

Gave up about halfway to the falls. Too buggy - deep woods off didn't even work. Lots of mud. Back to the lake and a beer.
