Owner description: The Missouri Civil War Museum is housed in the old 1905 Jefferson Barracks Post Exchange (PX) and Gymnasium building, formerly part of the Jefferson Barracks military post, which is still an active military installation to this day. Renovations began in 2003, and were completed 10 years later in 2013, with an opening date of June 29, 2013. During the Civil War, the property which this museum is located upon, contained various hospital ward buildings, where suffering and death occurred, thus making this sacred ground, and a most appropriate location for a Missouri Civil War Museum, honoring our soldiers of the past and present.
Useful Information: Bathroom facilities, Stairs / lift, Wheelchair access

The Civil War museum at Jefferson Barracks is one of the best private museum I have visited. The exhibits are attractive and the information adds to further knowledge of the war and the events leading up to the war. Good history on St. Louis, too. The price is right.

I stopped in during a business trip to St. Louis as something to do before heading back to the hotel. Coming from Houston, the old town charm was appealing and I enjoy seeing architecture reminiscent of the 1800’s. The price could not be beat for entrance and well worth it to help keep this facility going. The museum itself was first class and both factual and un-biased which was refreshing. There were many exhibits, artifacts to see, and videos to watch. Coming from Texas it was great to see my state flag represented as well. Definitely worth the hour to learn a little more about our history.

I was torn between 3 and 4 stars for the museum. It's got some interesting bits, but I felt that the exhibits were focused on the Confederacy and downplayed the role that Missouri soldiers had on the Union side. I believe that 3x more Missourians fought in the Union, so I was a little disappointed at the one-sided-ness of the museum.

I was unaware that the Civil War was so brutally fought in Missouri and Kansas. The museum is privately funded and was very well done. It took 10 years to restore the building to house the museum. The artifacts are displayed well with multiple movies running throughout the building to educate on the civil war. It is located to the south of St. Louis at the Jefferson Barracks which are named for Thomas Jefferson. I am not a civil war buff but I was surprised at how much I learned about the war in a short period of time. Well worth a visit.
