“A Funky Kind of Luxury”

Girlfriends, class of 1968, siblings invited try to get together once a year. We wanted to explore Kansas City, and I found this rental on VRBO. I booked months in advance and got a great rate. KC friends said the ground floor restaurant of the now renovated Rieger hotel was amazing and that the whole area was full of great restaurants. Those are other reviews. We were met by Brent. The front door led to two daunting vertical sets of stairs leading to the second and third floors. It was a grand staircase with railings but some of us had large suitcases. There is a small elevator in the back for an extra charge which Brent let us use. Since he carried up the big pieces, we didn't need the elevator. But the elevator makes it handicapped accessible, and one bath has a roll-in shower. Brent gave us a history of the hotel and a tour. There was a code for wifi and a number to call Brent. A friend called him at midnight because she saw a blinking light on the gas stove. Brent was available 24/7, and he called after I departed to make sure everything was okay. He was exceptional!

Luxury. The two king, two queen, and daybed were extremely comfortable with crisp white sheets. The pillows were heavenly. All rooms were spacious and comfortably furnished. Each level had a washer and dryer with detergent and softener. Two full kitchens with coffee makers and Duncan Donuts coffee in the freezers. Toiletries included lotion, shampoo, cream rinse, mouthwash. The third level had a huge living area with fireplace that opened to a large well-equipped gourmet kitchen. The table was from Peru, beautiful wood with individual drawers, and comfortably seated twelve. The coffee table was also an interesting carved wood. The living room had a smaller dining table where the seven of us gathered comfortably. The living room itself was a wonderful gathering placed, filled with comfortable couches and a large tv. The king bedroom at the back of the third story was loaded with closets and had a level shower with surround shower curtain. Brent warned us that the tile was slippery. The room also had a tv. The rooms were painted in warm earth tones. My king room on the second floor was a loden green with heavy earth tone striped draperies. Though the room was at the front of the building on Main St., the drapes muffled the sound of the street noise. We also heard only a hint of music from the busy restaurant below. There is trolley construction and condo construction during the day. We didn't hear much. Very solid structure. On that same level were the two queen rooms. One queen room had charcoal walls and carpeting. A giant tv was mounted on the wall with two black theater chairs. The other queen room was a burnt orange with beautiful closets and a walk in adobe shower. On that level next to the master was a laundry room, small kitchen, daybed, and a large area with a shower, toilet, and sink. The rooftop had an enclosed seating area and outdoor oversized cushioned chairs.

Funky. Though the space was renovated, it retained many of the original features, which seemed typical of the restaurants and businesses in that area. The floors were cement with the metal support showing through. The giant staircases were stone with the original metal and wood railings. The living levels were open to each other but there were heavy metal and glass doors that you could shut for privacy. On my level most of the doors were original. My king looked like it might have originally been two hotel rooms with two doors on each side. A door on each side opened to shelves, no closet. One door opened to laundry. The other opened to a teeny bath with a large tub, sink, and toilet. All newer. I have to have a tub, but for many it would be difficult to negotiate. The toilet wobbled, but there are two other public toilet and sink areas on that floor. My room had a large couch, chair, and coffee table, and it wasn't hard to live out of a suitcase for three nights.

Staying above the Rieger was an adventure. The Main St. Max bus went from the river to the Plaza. The stop was right in front. We were an easy walk to the train station and to gourmet restaurants galore. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we will probably meet at the Rieger in Kansas City next time instead of another city. We hate to advertise our Funky Kind of Luxury treasure.

Came to KC for the weekend for a Chiefs game and found the Rieger. The place is large clean and beautiful. The pics don't do this building justice. Love the history behind the building. We also attended a concert downtown at the Sprint Center and found this location to work well. It is walkable to many restaurants and bars and provides terrific customer service. Great Bang for your Buck!

“The Rieger, a great Kansas City Experience”
Reviewed 28 December 2014 for a stay in March 2014

I visited and stayed for three days at the Rieger last March. This is a classic building with great architecture and a wonderful nostalgic touch with a great rooftop view. This is a building that has a story to tell. The Rieger accommodated my large family. Excellent value!

If you are looking for a great KC experience, look no further. I love the rooftop that looks out at the Western Auto building and Union Station. I can't wait to stay here again and this will be the first place I look next time I'm going to be in KC.
