Owner description: The Biloxi Lighthouse was erected in 1848 and was one of the first cast-iron lighthouses in the South. It is the city's signature landmark and has become a post-Katrina symbol of the city's resolve and resilience. The light was civilian operated from 1848 to 1939, and is notable for its several female lightkeepers, including Maria Younghans, who tended the light for 53 years. In 1939, the U.S. Coast Guard assumed responsibility for the light's operation. After being declared surplus property in 1968, the Biloxi Lighthouse was deeded to the City of Biloxi, which eventually opened it to public tours. The lighthouse has withstood many storms over the years. Katrina's storm surge enveloped a third of the 64-foot tall lighthouse, and the constant pounding from the water and winds toppled many bricks that lined the interior of the cast iron tower. The storm’s winds also broke many of the windows in the light cupola and destroyed the structure's electrical systemIn March 2010, the city re-opened the lighthouse to public tours after a 14-month, $400,000 restoration that was funded by FEMA and MEMA and completed by Biloxi contractor J.O. Collins.

This was our second trip up the Biloxi Lighthouse (3/30/18). It's just $5 to go up. It's a smaller lighthouse with a really cool view once at the top. I was so impressed with the employees at the Biloxi Visitor center as well. I called on 3/29 to confirm the times the lighthouse was open for visitors. He gave me the times and then about 45 minutes later called me back to tell me that they weren't doing the tour that day due to lightning in the area. I wish I would've gotten his name. That saved me a trip and is something that he didn't even have to do. Great customer service!

First time visitors, we went at about noon when it was windy and overcast limiting our time to about ten minutes. Later on our way back to the hotel it was about sunset and the skies cleared with just a breeze making it a perfect sunset view of the lighthouse and the background..

You can't visit Biloxi without at least getting a picture of the lighthouse, can you? Of course not! Take some pictures from the Lighthouse Pier parking lot, and then cross the street to the Visitors Centre to learn all about the lighthouse, it's history, and even arrange a tour! You have to see it, it's right in the middle of the road!!! lol

It is a very nice lighthouse but I didn't get to see it at night. However, you can imagine how it looks at night, it is right along Highway 90, you can't miss it as you ride down the beach.

A landmark of the MS Gulf Coast. I love to see the lighthouse when we visit Biloxi. It has the visitor center across the street from the lighthouse.
