Owner description: Old state asylum that is being renovated into shops, restaurants, wineries, and more...lots to look at, including tons of trails to walk, bike, ski, etc.

In the 19th century we built elaborate asylums for those considered insane, unfit or otherwise not assimilated to society.
By late 20th century we turned these folks out on the streets with a prescription for Xanax or something similar. What to do with all the grand old sanatoriums now empty?
Enterprising developers in Traverse City settled on high-end condominiums and a unique shopping complex. Beautiful grounds, interesting and quirky shops, nice restaurants and coffee shops. You’d hardly know this was once a home for the insane. Sleep tight tonight, ya hear?

There were lots of unique shops and a couple of restaurants. I found a couple of things I couldn't live without. Worth a visit. There is also a botanical garden close by that has a very nice hiking trail behind the garden. The trail is wide and well groomed but a little challenging.

Old mental hospital has been transformed into one of largest restoration projects in Michigan, now a nice mixed use development of shops, restaurants, and living accommodations. Worth a visit, take the tour.

This was a tour you won’t forget. The tour guide had a connection to the property and it showed. He was very knowledgeable about the asylum and it’s restoration efforts. It was two hours well spent.
