Owner description: Mari Vineyards founder Marty Lagina made the (some would say) crazy choice to grow grapes that shouldn't grow in Michigan, with the belief that he could produce world class wines that otherwise couldn't be made here. So, true to his Italian heritage, he planted exotic varieties like Nebbiolo, Sangiovese and others. Combined with a little creative grape growing and a lot of attention, today his dream has become a reality. Along with classic area grapes like Cabernet Franc and Merlot, Mari Vineyards produces a wide variety of red wines unlike anything else produced in Michigan. Our first vineyard was planted on Old Mission Peninsula over a hot and frantic weekend in 1999. With thousands of vines - including some of the more uncommon varieties mentioned above - waiting to be planted and either baking in the sun or soaking up too much water, things had to happen fast. Marty and family called in as much help as possible, but in the rush to get the vines planted mistakes were made. Roughly the first seven rows of the vineyard are made up of a random assortment of grape varieties, grabbed haphazardly from their soaking tanks and planted before we realized our mistake. To this day, we do not know exactly what vines are planted in these rows. What seemed to be a disaster back in 1999 proved to be good fortune. 2006 marked the first official production of our flagship wine, named Row 7 in honor of the first seven mysterious rows in the vineyard and produced exclusively with grapes from that area. True to its origins, Row 7 was unlike anything else we had tried in Northern Michigan, with a flavor all its own. Building on the success of our first vintage, Mari Vineyards now has over 50 acres of vineyards planted entirely on the Old Mission Peninsula, with more being added every year. Our wines are already available in Traverse City area stores and restaurants, and our brand new winery and tasting room is now complete on Old Mission Peninsula. Until you get a chance to visit, we invite you to explore our website and learn more about our truly unique and exciting Michigan wines!

This was my first visit to this winery. It's less than 2 years old but what a beautiful building and great views. We went on Saturday and they had live music. They didn't have a huge selection of wines but we tried a couple that were good. They have a beautiful pictures behind their wine bar made of corks. It was amazing! Great staff as well. Another must stop.

After going to Chateau Chantel first, we were a little disappointed with Mari. There isn't a huge selection, due to it being a new up and coming winery, so I'm sure it will improve over the years. The location is great, really neat building, with some relaxing seating for a glass of wine. It was a little limited when we were there since it was raining and moderately busy. The bar isn't very big, so I imagine there can be quite a wait during a busy day. Definitely something to watch over the next couple years, though would recommend skipping if busy - not worth a wait.

We loved the location! Looks like a wedding reception site. It was raining so we did not go outside.

Wine tasting though was mediocre. Some wines bland. One bottle opened by our server was bad. It is a new winery so we may check back in a few years but did not care for their only selections of dry wines.

Check out the view if you travel old mission! Well worth it!

Our visit here wasn't what we expected. We stood at the tasting counter for about 15 minutes without even being looked at by a staff member who was pouring tastings for the people right next to us. Another spot at the counter opened up so we moved down there, and stood there for about 10 minutes without being acknowledged. It wasn't until the couple next to us said something to the staff member about us being there before them that we were finally served. The wine was pretty good, but the one we would have liked to buy wasn't available to purchase by the bottle. The building was very nice, as well as the views, but we didn't have the chance to sit and appreciate them since we waited so long for our tasting.

Cool European castle feeling with a pass through fireplace to inside from outside patio courtyard. Panoramic lake views with Fall colors contrasting green cut lawn and blue lake. Interesting art.
