“Super stay, just the ticket”
Reviewed 18 September 2015 for a stay in September 2015

Set in a perfect location if you want to get away from it all but still be able to connect to town life without any hassle, Le Hibou Heureux is spot on.
We enjoyed a lovely stay in this well presented holiday home which had everything we were looking for.
I cannot comment on the air conditioning as we did not need it, the option to partially open/close the surround shutters were all we required.
You do need to have access to a car to make the most of your stay but we were looking to explore the region anyway so this was well suited to us.
We'll definitely be back!

“Excellent Accommodation”
Reviewed 12 September 2015 for a stay in August 2015

Great accommodation. Immaculately clean and so well equipped, we wanted for nothing. There were five adults, two teenagers and a toddler in our party and there was plenty of room all of us to have a very comfortable vacation.

The location is fantastic, quiet and secluded yet just a five minute drive to St. Cyprien for the fresh produce market and supermarket, boulangeries etc. Best boulangerie in the area is Lucco, which is even closer.

The grounds were immaculate and the property has a good size pool with plenty of sunbeds. The property owners/managers have thought of everything to make for a relaxed holiday. They have even provided Inflatables for the kids (and large kids) to enjoy in the pool. Large family table and chairs on the patio which we made good use of for our breakfasts and evening meals.

The bedrooms all have their own beautifully appointed bathroom/shower rooms. Good quality beds, lovely crisp linens and fuffy towels.

I have no hesitation in recommending this property. Thank you for a very, very enjoyable and relaxing stay.

“A wonderful holiday”
Reviewed 18 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

We travelled to the Dordogne from England with a family group of three adults and three grown up children. It was a wonderful place for a family group to meet up. The accommodation and facilities are excellent and well presented. Internally and externally this is a highly maintained property. The owner and the agent were all very helpful before, during and after the let. The house is off the beaten track a little but this added to our enjoyment (the Dordogne area can be very busy and we were still close enough for all the main attractions of the area as well as Bergerac airport).
We loved the pool and the al fresco eating. There was plenty of grass for us to play badminton and outside games without bothering anyone. We walked from the house almost every day round the lanes and were rewarded with lovely views over the river. We visited the chateaux at Beynac, Castelnaux & Milandes - all very close. We cycled to local villages- Sarlat, Domme etc- although it's a steep climb on the way back to the house! We canoed and picniced twice on the river which was marvellously cool. There were plenty of markets and places of interest very near to the area. Each day it was great to come back to a lovely place and relax in the pool.

“A Beautiful Villa with Pool. Advert sadly inaccurate regarding air conditioning and en suites.”
Reviewed 9 August 2015 for a stay in July 2015

The very short review posted on 21st July by 514Sam coincides with our two week holiday. It was not left by us. I wonder who has left this review?!

We visited Le Hibou Heureux as a group of 8 people, four adults and four children, from Saturday 11th July to Saturday 25th July and were told by the agents that we were the first guests ever to use this property since it had been renovated. I do not see how this previous review can have been written by another guest during our stay.

When searching for suitable properties our requirements included air conditioning, a pool, en-suite bathrooms and wifi.

Our two families drove to the villa from the UK in separate cars. The other family were able to use the latitude/longitude numbers given to find the villa and did so with ease. We had to rely on the owners directions which were wrong and added an extra hour to our eight hour journey.

The villa description is false. There is NO air conditioning at this property except for a single unit on the open Mezzanine level which was broken and beyond repair. None of the bedrooms have air conditioning. I am disappointed to see this information is still a key point on the website in spite of us having complained to the owner.

An engineer was called out to inspect the single unit on the Mezzanine level but was unable to make this function. Had this unit been working it would have been totally inadequate to cool the mezzanine, staircase, kitchen, lounge and dining areas which are all open plan.

The villa has a temperature gauge which can be used to control the ground source heating system but does not provide any cool air. With the outside temperature in the high 30's, we were advised by the Agent to keep all the doors and windows shut and metal shutters down all day to keep the heat out.

The Agent, who is the owner’s mother, was sent out several times and eventually brought four free- standing air conditioning units. This was a greatly appreciated gesture but unfortunately, they had to be vented through the insect netting on an open window and were so 'industrially' noisy that we were unable to run them while we occupied the bedrooms. The owner emailed me in response to my complaint saying ‘we hope you are enjoying your holiday, even without air conditioning. I believe the house is still a very nice place to be’. It was so hot that we were all unable to sleep well at night.

The second point which is false is the ‘en suite’ description. The listing says 3 En-Suite rooms.

The villa sleeps eight. It has three double bedrooms which are listed as en suite and a double mezzanine which is not. Only one of the double rooms is fully equipped with a toilet, sink, shower, bath and bidet. The other two double rooms have a shower and a sink…no toilet. We only discovered this point some time after we had made the booking and paid the deposit, when the owner sent a more detailed layout of the rooms.

This means that six people have to share the downstairs communal toilet, adjacent to the lounge area, day and night. One en suite and one communal toilet is not adequate for eight people.

On a more positive note, the villa was spotless and is beautiful. It has been renovated to a very high spec. There is ample parking. All the rooms are clean with fresh linen on arrival. The beds/pillows are comfortable. Decoration is modern and well thought out. There is plenty of space and a good sized kitchen and lounge area. The dining table inside the house comfortably seats eight. The pantry cupboard is stocked with all the essentials required and we found all the required household utensils.

The pool is large and clean with inflatables provided. The garden is large are well maintained. We did have a gardener/pool man at the villa on several occasions. We encountered large numbers of bees, wasps and a few hornets, attracted by the flowers around the patio and pool water. This is difficult as the villa is in the middle of the country, which we knew, but nevertheless, children don’t like them. The patio is small and the outside table is overcrowded with eight. There is a large barbeque with an additional seating area at the rear of the villa.

The Dordogne is a magnificent area and the local town is literally a 5 minute drive away. There is a bakers at the end of the lane… a 2 minute drive and they produce the most delicious breads, pastries and cakes.

There are local attractions including canoeing on the river, sky riding for the children, magnificent caves, markets and a small aqua park within easy each.

The Agent is very pleasant and was very concerned that we were all enjoying our holiday and was trying very hard to resolve the problems we encountered. This is a new rental and the owner will want it to succeed and it will, provided people’s expectations are met. This can only be achieved with a realistic advert. I think most people who take a long time to select their family holiday, based on an advert will be annoyed when they arrive to find the advert untrue.

“Inaccurate description caused holiday disappointment”
Reviewed 8 August 2015 for a stay in July 2015

There is a 5 star one line review posted 21 July, when we were at this property:it is not our review and is not indicative of our experience and I would not like to speculate where it comes from.
We were a group of 2 families: 2 adult couples and 4 children. Our requirements were for four en suite bedrooms, pool, wifi and air conditioning. The property details fitted these requirements with the exception of 4 en suites, as only 3 were stated, but we compromised on the fourth as the property looked lovely and was available for our dates. Having made the booking, we asked the owner as to room layouts so we could allocate rooms. It was only at this point it became clear that there were not 3 en suites, but only one, the other two being only shower rooms. This meant that there were 2 toilets in total, one in an en suite adults room, and the other a communal downstairs toilet for the other couple and 4 children.
The owner should not be disingenuous and should state 1 en suite and two bedrooms with showers and a separate downstairs toilet. One toilet between 6 people is not sufficient when staying a luxury villa.
The directions to the property were incorrect. We arrived with no problems as we used longitude / latitude but the other family used the owner's directions and criss crossed the hillside for over an hour.
Upon arrival, impressions were very good. The agent ( who is also the owner's mother) was there to meet us and was very charming and helpful. It's a pretty house, in a new but spacious garden with a lovely pool of a good size for 4 children. ( however, the dense flower-bed planting next to the pool meant there were swarms of wasps and bees over the water and around the pool. The owner may want to think of replanting with less insect-appeal!) . Outside is peaceful with a lovely setting, but the patio area is appropriate for 4-6, not 8. There is a Barbeque and pool toys are provided.
Inside, it is fitted and furnished to a very good standard. It was spotlessly clean and there was plenty of fresh linen and towels and a very well stocked kitchen. However, although air conditioning was listed , there is none. There was a non- functioning unit on the mezzanine but nothing else. The house was unbearably hot day and night and we had difficulty sleeping. The agent tried to help by calling in the engineers, but they could only confirm that the mezzanine unit did not work or be made to work, and the house system was a ground pump water heating system, and could not be used to cool the house. The agent suggested that we close the house up ( shutters and doors) in the day . The owner's email response was that it was a lovely house and we should still be able to enjoy our holiday without air conditioning.
The agent brought in freestanding air con units for the bedrooms, but these were so loud it was impossible to sleep with them on. I must state that I appreciated her efforts to help the situation and she went to great lengths to try to help, but unfortunately without success.
It was clear to us that the owner has only just started to rent out this property. She may have been over zealous in ticking boxes in the "property description"section. The result was that we paid for and travelled a long way to a property that was not as described. Our precious holiday weeks were compromised as a result. The owner was not overly apologetic and as she is responsible for the property description, I would suggest that she amends this straightaway so that other holiday-makers are not deceived.
The area is beautiful- lush green, not overly packed with tourists and generally go- slow and relaxing. There is a lot on offer: markets, canoeing, prehistoric caves, beautiful villages and always the river for swimming, canoeing, picnics and boat trips. The house is near to St Cyprien ( 5 mins in the car) with all you need.
I am giving the property one star on the basis of what we got versus the description given. If it had been advertised as a non air conditioned property suitable for a maximum of 6 people with one en suite , I would have given more.

Dear reviewer, I'm saddened that you found so many things which detracted from you enjoying your holiday in my house. Holiday homes and residences in the area are very similar in that the people use common sense and maintain the shutters closed on the side of the house exposed to the sun. You should perhaps have been briefed on your arrival. I apologise that the cooling system was not functional. I have spent 42,000 Euros on a state of the art aerothermic system which operates by taking the energy from the air and transforming it to heat or cool. The system works with under floor pipes with the fan on the mezzanine allowing cool air to fall to the main living room below. The bedrooms should have been equipped with fans - air cons not required - I apologise that these were not in place for your arrival. As for the garden, I planted bee and butterfly friendly plants to give both scent and a pleasant ambience. Wasps are generally not present, you must have been unlucky!
My house has been enjoyed by other holiday makers with positive reviews, I can't believe that you consider it only rated 1 star, however you're entitled to your opinion. I know that an effort was made to resolve your complaints with the purchase of expensive portable air cons. The noise means that they were either on max fan speed (not necessary) or on a hard surface Placing on the rug would have alleviated this quite simply. If the air is moving in the room the ambient temperature drops to a comfortable level.
As for the other review submitted while you were in the house - there seems to be an inference that we have submitted a review where in fact it was a previous holiday maker who was slow with his/her submission.
Mrs M it's disappointing that you failed to enjoy my luxury home. The rooms and furnishings are of superior quality, I have invested a lot of money in my house and garden and to read your review is disheartening. However your points are noted and perhaps my modest suggestions on how to manage comfort levels by the the simple expedient of preventing the sun from entering the home may make future holidays a more pleasant experience.
Thanks for taking the time to review.
Regards - Ewen
