Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: It's a different time inside the stately stone walls of Fort Mackinac. The cannon blasts, the rifles fire, the soldiers march and history comes alive. The oldest building in Michigan and 13 other historical structures boast exhibits explaining everything from military training and battles to medical treatments to family life within the fort. More than just a military outpost, Fort Mackinac served as a home for soldiers and their families and eventually the headquarters for Mackinac National Park, where tourists to the island visited the great fortress on the bluff, much like they do today. This is Mackinac.

A fun place to visit. Interesting to see and hear the history behind the fort. Got to see the cannon fire and received an informative walk through.

This is a great place to visit on the island. The "soldiers" are very good at explaining and showing you what it was like to be stationed on Fort Mackinac in the 1880's. The buildings are well done not only on the outside but many of them have displays set up to explain how things ran "back in the day." The doctor's infirmary was very interesting as they use holograms of the Fort's Doctor explaining 3 cases and then a modern day nurse steps in to explain how their ailments would be treated today. Also was fun "getting in line" with the soldiers on the main field and doing some marching exercises...come on...give it a try. They also do periodic rifle shooting displays and will fire off a cannon a few times during the day. We took the carriage ride to view the island and they dropped us off at the front gate. But you can also enter the Fort just off the downtown up from the Island Visitor's Center. Put this on your Island List.

The buildings and grounds themselves are interesting, and you'll likely learn a bit of history. There are a handful of actors (maybe 6 or 7?) dressed in period costume. The other staff, once inside, are boy scouts. The actors tend not to be in any of the buildings, but rather can be seen doing historical skits on a regular rotation on the grounds between the buildings. When it comes to the buildings themselves, you'll be reading signs, listening to recordings, watching an occasional short video, and (in at least one case) watching an "animatronics" exhibit. It would be super helpful to identify which artifacts on display are truly from this fort, vs. replicas.

There are a lot of different buildings to walk through learning the history of fort. Our carriage tour guide talked about the fort which was a nice addition before touring fort. Purchasing a ticket to the fort also gives you admission to other buildings in town. Wish we would have known about fort cafe , we ate lunch before touring fort. The patio view from cafe is awesome!

I knew nothing about the history of this time or place. It was very enlightening to see the way the soldiers lived and were able to have their families with them. Winters on the island were brutal.
