I have driven by the sign on I-290 for the Memorial many times and finally stopped. It is only a few miles off the highway in Green Hill Park. Once you turn into the park's road, the Memorial is about a mile up. While the Memorial is small and understated, it is very powerful. Not only are there slabs with the names of the fallen but there are some inscribed with letters written by soldiers, who later died at an early age. The grounds are nicely landscaped with trails near the Memorial.
Yesterday was our first time in that particular area and we stopped by the memorial upon the recommendation of a friend. It far exceeded my expectations. The pillars with letters written by soldiers killed in the war were sobering and moving. It is a beautiful, peaceful space, and an outstanding tribute to our Massachusetts Vietnam Vets.
Letters from actual soldiers are part of the unique highlights. A simple but effective remembrance long overdue from the Vietnam era in a perfect setting .
The first time I visited the Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans Memorial I cried after reading most of the letters on the stones. It was such an emotional experience for me, especially since I lived through that Era. Now, though, each time I visit, I see the beauty in the layout of the entire park, and see what a tranquil and wonderful place this is. It is not just a memorial. It is a Garden of Rememberance.
The animal farmland has been hurting for years but it does provide a nice opportunity for young ones. The remainder of the park is nice. Picnic areas, playground, pond for viewing or fishing. One new highlight is the Vietnam Memorial which is very tastefully done and provides plenty of areas for quiet meditation. While I don't know many of the names one was special for me because he came home badly wounded and left us earlier than he should have. Rest in peace Kevin, I'll catch up with you one day.
The Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Green Hill Park is a lovely oasis where people can find solace and comfort. It is beautifully designed and built and it is surrounded by woods, a lake and the Arboretum. With benches, walkways and water, it is a peaceful spot to relax and think. In addition there are nice trails through the woods. There is a large parking lot also.
