Although we made a couple of trips to Bar Harbor we really didn't want to be in the middle of that crowded tourist scene there for most of our stay. Foothold was perfect for us because, being located in Northeast Harbor, it is on a quiet part of the island; is on a hiking trail that gave us access to any trail or carriage road on the island; and is a five minute walk from the beautiful Asticou Azalea Gardens or the harbor. The location of the cottage itself is beautiful.
The grocery store in Northeast Harbor is too expensive--and it's an unfriendly place--but it's not that far to the IGA Southwest Harbor Food Mart where people are friendly and prices are reasonable. The only negative was that we were told to place our garbage at the end of the driveway before 7:00am on Monday/Thursday for pick-up. We did, but it was not picked up and, returning from a hike, we found the bag torn open and the trash scattered.
