The Clara Bog walk is an easy 1km loop around a section of preserved bog just a few minutes from Clara. We visited to experience the flat openness of the bog landscape but local families also come to walk their dogs and get some exercise.
There is parking on both sides of the road and some information on signs along the path but no toilet facilities. The area is quite windblown, so bring a jacket.
Highly recommend a visit to the Clara Bog Visitor Center that is located at the Clara library. Contrary to what TripAdvisor says it is in fact open (though it might close for some parts of the year?). The center's website has current hours. The center is small and will take about half an hour to go through -- or a little bit more if you watch the 14 minute film.
It's easy when visiting Ireland to focus just on the most well known tourist sites (the tour companies and guidebooks really market the big ones), but bogs have been such an important part of Ireland's history and landscape that, if you have time, it is worth the effort to see one firsthand... and not just a fleeting glimpse from the window of a car or bus.
Clara is relatively close to Clonmacnoise if you have a car. I would recommend visiting both.
