There isn't a lot to see in Davenport but the Figge holds some of the best American paintings including a couple by Grant Wood that need to be seen in person. Iowa University students get free admission.

It was my first time into this huge new building. I preferred the Midwest works by Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, and local artists John Bloom and Helen Hinrichsen. I also enjoyed the Haitian paintings with their bright colors and primitive style. "In the Footsteps of Masters: The Evolution of the Reproductive Print" was an excellent special exhibit, I believe on loan (with other works) from the University of Iowa Museum of Art while they deal with their flood damaged building.

The modern art left me cold. The black painting is not really all black. If you look closely you can see that it is made up of 9 squares of slightly different shades of black. What a bunch of baloney! What excellent salesmanship to convince someone that it is worth hanging in a gallery! Perhaps it is upside down?
