“Peaceful and Private”

My wife and I spent the weekend here. The cabin was clean and comfortable. It is obvious that the owners care about the property inside and out. The property is just across the road from the river, a very scenic location. One evening we had a fire in the outdoor pit and only a few cars went by in a few hours. The place is very quiet with nature all around. Great owners and a great stay.

“a cozy cabin in the country”

The hospitality was amazing. A little disappointed because it had no Wi-Fi or washer dryer and that was stated as part of its amenities. Other wise it has five stars for the convenience and they had everything you could need. It was well stocked. my teenagers love it.Will always rent when coming if available.

“Perfect spot in the woods along a quiet road next to a river!”
Reviewed 13 May 2014 for a stay in April 2014

My travel buddy and I were looking for a quiet spot to do some hiking and plan our next big vacation and this place was perfect! Donna and Jim promptly responded to my every email, answering all my questions and Donna even called a few times. This place sits right next to the White river (which was flooded and over its banks when we visited). Donna called a day ahead to see if we would be OK driving thru an inch of water on the road if it hadn't receded. If we were not OK driving thru the water, she was willing to move us to another of her properties at no charge; very accommodating. Turns out the river was down enough to allow access to the road & cabin. Donna met us at the cabin with the keys and to show us around. There is a quaint creek that runs behind the house that supposedly has some fossils and we loved the huge covered front patio with the chairs and swing. Donna loves to garden so there were blooming flowers everywhere! We took advantage of the warm weather and cooked dinner on the grill one nite (charcoal provided) and ate out on the picnic table. At nite we sat in the comfy Adirondack chairs placed around the bonfire (not lit, too warm) and enjoyed a glass of wine and the view of the river. Altho no cable, we don't watch TV when we visit, and no wifi but we had our phones w/ internet. Note that AT&T sometimes has spotty coverage in this area. You may want to bring your own movie DVD's as there is a player but a very limited selection of so-so movies. The country/fishing motif in this house is perfect for its location, fishing rod curtain rods, etc. It has 2 bedrooms, one is very large with a queen bed and the one bath is off that bedroom. The 2nd bedroom is very small with a bunk futon - a twin on top and a full on the bottom. The nearest grocery store is in downtown Shoals (about a 10 min drive) and its tiny with limited choices so if you want something exotic (fresh herbs or romaine lettuce) better bring it with you. Also the cabin did not have any wine glasses so bring your own. We followed Donna one day to her new property on Chicken Farm Rd, she gave us a tour then we parked our car on her lot, walked 200 ft. up the road to Martin State Forest where there are over 14 fire roads you can hike. I would suggest taking the book in the house library to show the hikes and check out the park maps we left that were picked up at the park's bike trail head. There are other very nice hiking trails off the main entrance to the park off of highway 50. Jim & Donna own about 50 wood acres. It's a short but steep climb up Jim & Donna's driveway to the top of the hill where they live and where they have their bed and Breakfast. The house is original 1800's log cabins and it was amazingly reconstructed into a larger home. Their B&B has its own entrance, a large sitting room, a bedroom and a loft bedroom, much larger than any B&B I've seen. A large wrap around deck offers great views of the woods and there is a hot tub everyone can use. The River Side cabin is about 25 minutes north of French Lick, a very easy, scenic drive. We had planned for 3 nites at River Side Cabin and 2 in French Lick. Once we arrived in French Lick, we wish we had stayed at the cabin all 5 nites and do day trips to French Lick instead. There just isn't much to see/do in French Lick and your hotel choices are very limited. We would highly recommend doing a spa day at Balanced Body Work & Massage in French Lick! They offer a long list of services at prices 1/2 what the 2 large resorts in French Lick charge. Overall we couldn't be happier with our selection of where to stay and hopefully will return again.
