“Koh Samui for the second time”
Reviewed 17 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We had ten days staying at a one bedroom villa at the Samui Boat Lagoon in July, 2015. The email correspondence with Mark and Eileen carried out prior to our stay was friendly, professional and informative, and on arrival we were picked up from the airport by the resort's driver early in the morning. We had been told that because we were arriving at around 9.00 am from Singapore, we could only expect to gain access to the villa by 3.00 pm, but would have the opportunity to use the resort's main pool facility during the day. As it happened, we were able to go into the villa almost immediately - a great and welcome boon, given almost twenty-four hours of plane flights and airports.

The villa was exactly as described - spotless throughout, and well-appointed. A couple of the pieces of indoor furniture were beginning to look a little bit 'sun-tired' but apart from that, the furniture and bedding and kitchen and bathroom were hard to fault, and the simply designed landscaping was elegant and minimal. The proprietors are absolutely right about the privacy of the villas - they really are a haven for a relaxing holiday.

We did twenty or so laps of the resort's twenty-five metre pool early every morning (open from 7.00 am to 7.00 pm) before using the villa kitchen for breakfast. Usually we spent most of the morning reading and relaxing by the pool before heading out around midday to do other things. The cleaning was regular and thorough and usually occurred mid-afternoon. The water in the villa pool was reticulated on a regular basis and even though there wasn't any evidence of it being physically cleaned during the ten day stay, we didn't have any concerns about this since the pool remained both very clear and detritus-free. It was great to cool off in the pool.

We ate out in the evenings, mainly along the top end of Koh Samui - Fisherman's Village, Bophut and Maenam Beach. Highlights were Za Zen, Barracuda and the crazily-named Orgasmic Restaurant. We had one execrable meal on a night of teeming rain in Fisherman's Village in an overpriced and clumsily staffed and unnamed (by us) restaurant. Za Zen, Barracuda and Orgasmic all feature in the Koh Samui Restaurant Guide and we thought all of them deserved to be there - expect to pay a reasonably robust price for the meals but all three delivered excellent food. The killer is the price of alcoholic drinks (wine in particular) which tends to bump up the price of meals markedly, and to counter this we usually had a G &T at the villa before heading out, and then settled for a beer or a single glass of wine with the meal.

If one is being critical of the Restaurant Guide, it would be that it tends to over-emphasise those restaurants that either offer Asian-fusion or European-focused dining at the expense of more traditional Thai restaurants. That said, the Thai Set offered at Za Zen was exceptional (4000 baht with two glasses of wine) and well worth the price. And it should be noted that at all the restaurants mentioned above, one can have a good meal for half that price. We also ate at a number of Thai restaurants all over the island on our stay and the cost was usually only a few hundred baht and the food, by and large, was good to excellent.

We hired a car for seven days - it's a toss up really, and depends on how flexible one wants to be. It meant we could go anywhere we wanted on the island in relative safety. We deliberately chose not to ride motorbikes and having seen the remains of several bikes and the attendance of ambulances at the crash scenes, it was probably a reasonable and discretionary choice for a couple not used to riding motorbikes! Expect to pay around 400 baht for a taxi for the ride from Samui Boat Lagoon to either Chaweng Beach or Fisherman's Village/Bophut Beach.

The Wat Plai Laem, which sits back from the road only five minute's walk away from the Boat Lagoon is well worth a visit and, in terms of visual impact is even more impressive than its better known and perhaps more prominent Buddhist site, the Big Buddha. It's on the way to the nearest village 9/11 Store, Food Mart and Pharmacy, and small restaurants, all of which are a seven to ten minute walk away from the resort.

The foreshore in front of the resort is interesting but not 'beachy' being so tidal and there is a large amount of detritus strewn along the water's edge. Best to take up the resort's offer of a shuttle bus to Choeng Mon beach around the corner or head off to Bophut or Mae Nam beaches. These beaches offer lots of attractions including food and water sports and the beaches are pleasant to swim from.

We tended to avoid the Chaweng Beach area, preferring the more laid-back and (we think) more accessible and interesting top end. We spent one day visiting the Hin Lat Waterfall on the western side of the island. While neither the Wat or the restaurant at the base of the climb are particularly noteworthy, we found the walk to the waterfall enjoyable and the physical effort needed to make the two kilometre uphill trek meant that the cool swim in the pool underneath the cascade was much appreciated. There wasn't a large flow of water down the falls but it was very refreshing. The walk is best tackled in decent walking shoes or trainers rather than lightweight sandals.

All in all, we had a great ten day break before going on to Kuala Lumpur. Other activities included two days of diving with the Dive Academy (situated at the Bandara Resort on Bophut Beach). Trips to Sail Rock (a great ocean dive site) and Koh Tao included some exciting and interesting diving with a highly professional and friendly dive team. The boat captain gunned the high powered dive boat through some fairly choppy seas on two windy days with great skill and the staff instructors were all attentive and knowledgeable.

We would definitely stay at the Boat Lagoon again.

Liked best: A peaceful haven that we would definitely recommend to friends and to readers. The staff were excellent and friendly.
Liked least: Nothing stands out. The air conditioning was quite noisy and there didn't seem to be a really low cycle sufficient for nighttime when the noise could be intrusive.

We had a wonderful 10 days at the 1 Bedroom Garden Villa with Private Pool, at Choeng Mon. The villa was exactly as described on Tripadvisor and the website. We had requested an early check-in and the staff was happy to entertain our request. The van was at the airport to pick us up on time.

We thoroughly enjoyed the villa. It was clean, the pool was small but fabulous and there were many options to order food from outside. A special mention about all the staff, who were extremely helpful and courteous. Its true that the villa is a bit away from the hustle and bustle of the party areas of the island, but we were traveling with our 3 year old daughter and werent interested in nightlife. The fishermans village was a short drive and we spent many evenings there. I would advise guests to rent a car or motocycle as there is never any traffic on the island that is unmanageable and we rented one for the entire stay so traveling was never an issue.
I wish this place had its own bar and basic appetizers. The outside large pool is amazing but needs some serviced drinks and snacks. I hope they can manage to put this in place.

Would i come back? I most definitely would come back.
We even got a late checkout on the day of our departure!

“No tan lines!”

We arrived at Koh Samui airport to be met by a very courteous driver. We were driven to the resort in a very smart air conditioned car. On arrival, the reception staff were excellent, we were given chilled towels and our cases were quickly taken to our villa.

Check in complete, and we were shown our accommodation. What can I say! After a long flight, the strangest thing, was that you immediately felt at home. The living room and cooking area are outside and under heavy shade to protect you from the sun. Next to that was your own private pool. This pool was not designed to get you fit for an upcoming sporting event, however after laying on your lounger in the sun, it became an oasis of coolness. After the plunge (Bearing in mind the pool's heated by the sun and by four pm the water temp is around 26 degrees) you're ready to start another round of relaxing.

We stayed in villa 21 which is totally secluded once the outer perimeter door is closed. Hence after a couple of days, my wife decided that tan lines were "soo last year" and left with the best tan ever.

The outside / inside shower was great. (Go there and see)

Also on site is a bar / cafe / restaurant. They have free pool and table football. The Thai food they prepare is first rate and available to take away to your villa (There is also a selection of Western food. Club sandwiches etc that are also excellent).

The villa's are marketed as self catering. the cooking equipment is basic, two dinner plates, two side, two bowls etc. Perfect for toast in the morning, sandwiches at lunch etc, however no dinner parties. The fridge is huge with a good sized ice box.

The grounds are very well maintained with staff constantly attending to the plants and pool area etc. There's an infinity pool at the center of the resort which is outstanding. Plenty of loungers, and a constant supply of fresh towels.

The location is excellent. As always in Thailand we hired a moped. They are generally 125 - 150 cc. Helmets are mandatory now and most people wear them, Koh Samui is a beautiful island and it's difficult to ride a ped and watch the road as there is just so much to look at and it can be distracting. BE CAREFUL. Also you ride at your own risk. no insurance. You crash, you pay for the repairs.

The Villas can arrange moped hire. It's at a slightly higher rate than some of the outside companies, however our ped was virtually brand new. No scrapes, excellent tyres and lights.

From the Villas, Chaweng Beach is around ten minutes by moped and Fisherman's Village is around six. You can also easily walk to the Big Buddha temple which is a great visit and ten minutes on foot. Go in the afternoon and get to the Big Buddha Cafe by the main entrance to watch the sun set.

In all fairness, my wife and I needed a break. A retreat. Somewhere to do nothing and recharge the batteries. We did that here.

If you go, enjoy. You will not be disappointed.

(The actual name of this resort is Samui Boat Lagoon).
