“A beautiful cottage break in Tuscany with beautiful views and central location!”

What a wonderful place to stay!! Marino and Paolo were fantastic hosts. When we arrived there was a bottle of red wine and fresh eggs from their hens. It was a lovely warm welcome! From then on they were always available to answer any questions and advise us on the nicest places to visit. The beds were comfortable and they provided us with a cot for our little one. The pool has a great view and there is a very relaxed atmosphere! It is well located to access many wonderful sights! We enjoyed cycling around Lucca, visiting Barga in the mountains, cinque terre region and many different villas. Villa Reale is lovely! Fattoria Colle Verde is a great vineyard which offers wine tasting along side a lunch and walk around the vineyard! This was amazing and even do-able with our little one.
Pisa and Florence are only a short car drive away but it is nice to return to this beautiful cottage nestled in Matraia with surrounding vineyards, olive groves and a wonderful view!! Thank you Marino and Paolo xx

“Fantastic view”

This was a very nice holiday house. The hosts, who live in an adjoining house, are welcoming and helpful, the view was fantastic and the experience felt very authentic Tuscan. We travelled with our two young children (1 and 3) and found the house spacious and well equipped (although we brought our own high chair and cot).
About 20 minutes drive from Lucca, the house is high in the hills. The driveway was steep but paved and although it was tight we fit a Volvo XC-90 between the buildings into the flat parking space without too much trouble. There was space to turn around too.
The outside space consists of a private courtyards and two sitting areas, the best being up on a terrace behind the house with a great view over the house to the valley and hills in the distance. Our children chased the pet rabbit around here quite a bit.
The pool is lovely and is shared with the owners and whomever may be staying at the other holiday house also on the property. There is ample space for everybody.
The living area was Tuscan rustic and authentic. The new large window made the most of the view and kitchen was well equipped. There was a dishwasher, microwave, a stove and cooktop, a large fridge and a washing machine ( outside).
There was WIFI
The beds were comfortable and the bedrooms had enough hanging space.
If I were to moan about anything... the bathroom seemed a little damp and there were lots of steps, but steps come with the territory and our children were up and down them all the time.

The holiday was really nice, it's a great relaxing spot with friendly helpful hosts in a location with loads to do. It was everything I expected of Tuscany.

“Wonderful warm welcome and stunning views. Recommended for a place 'away from it all'”

The first thing that strikes you when arriving at L'Antico Borgo di Matraia (after the steep climb!) is the warm welcome from Marina and Paolo - what a lovely couple. There are two houses in which to stay - a larger family-sized home and a smaller place, ideal for couples. Marina had kindly left us a welcome basket of home grown fruit and vegetables and the holiday rental 'Il Forno' was lovely and clean and spotless when we arrived. The thing that struck us was the fantastic view from the dining area - breathtaking. The double bedroom is furnished in rustic Italian style, with antique furniture and is quite large. There is also a twin bedroom in a more contemporary style. The kitchen, although small, is well-equipped, even with a dishwasher and plenty of crockery.

Not to be missed is the swimming pool, that Paolo cleans lovingly each day. There are two cute changing cabins painted in pastel colours and plenty of private places to sit and relax, eat or drink. On top of that there are 5 lovely cats at the property, who saunter by from time to time for a nose! Il Forno is about 25 minutes from Lucca, a city to be enjoyed, but if you get chance do take a trip to Barga and the Garfagnana mountains too.

The only thing I would say is do not go in a sports car as the shale drive up to the Borgo is quite narrow and bumpy. Having said that it is worth it as the setting is beautiful, and the hospitality from Marina and Paolo wonderful. There is a couple of bars locally and a restaurant /pizzeria, but several other places en route to Lucca. Also good for walking and taking a picnic. Highly recommended.
