A great place for a drink after being up on the fells.

Wide choice of beers, great views from the beer garden.

Didn't eat here, but just browsing the menu that was on the table, there was a good selection on offer.

Thank Andy M

After a modest walk (but an exacting one at my age), we fell into this place without noticing that the NT had taken it over. My wife ordered a couple of pints and waited for some time to order the only thing on the menu that we fancied (a quiche) only to be told that it was sold out. This was at 1 o'clock and on a Friday.

She paid for the pints and we went next door to the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel where we had the place to ourselves, a varied menu and some very good food.

So I agree with some of the reviews below. The staff were trying their best but there weren't enough of them - only one serving and taking orders with a queue. I think the NT is complacent because it relies on a certain type of person turning up. (We are members ourselves.)

Not too sure why there are so many bad reviews for this place. Stayed at the campsite for the weekend and this was our favourite in that area.
Lovely views and well placed for a refuel after a day in the hills.
On the Saturday they had a BBQ outside in the sun. Great idea. Food lovely. Had nachos and the venison burger which was delicious, but could have had anything off the BBQ menu.
Atmosphere great with super friendly staff. Lots of locally sourced food and drink.
Well worth a stop off.
One pointer though: Chips!!!Got to have chips in a pub! I'd been thinking of a bowl of chips and a pint all day, in the hills and they only did sweet potato wedges!

Thank Sllea

Hi Sllea,

We're glad you had such a good time and enjoyed our BBQ as much as we do! Our team are particularly happy with your comments as even on the busy days they strive to deliver a great service.

In regards to the sweet potato wedges, we do usually serve regular wedges between 4-8/9pm but on BBQ days we have our kitchen closed to save power. We'd like to thank you for your feedback and if you'd like to discuss it further, feel free to e-mail me on Alex.cluderay@nationaltrust.org.uk.

Many thanks,
Alex Cluderay

Good beer, good food. Just what you need after a strenuous walk in the Lakes. But what really makes this place is everything possible is produced locally, even the ketchup!! Staff are very helpful. The only downside that it's a tourist trap, but hey thats the lakes.

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your positive comments, the team here are always thrilled when their efforts (such as sourcing products locally!) is noticed by our visitors. If you're interested in avoiding the hustle and bustle of Summer, you may want to visit us in winter, when we only tend to see a handful of people per day! We hope to see you again soon.

Many thanks,
Alex Cluderay

Title tells you everything you need to know! Food was very nice but not a massive menu. Everything on the menu was a bit different from the usual pub grub and looked top notch. The venison burger was lovely. Plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. All locally sourced produce as well. 10 different local ales on tap. I can highly recommend this place.
