Singer is not only a museum but also a theatre and it has recently been renovated. It is now an absolutely stunning building that would not be out of place in Amsterdam’s museum quarter but you would not expect something of this magnitude in the quaint little town of Laren. Absolutely worth a visit. Especially now the newly discovered Van Gogh pen drawings are on display at Singer.

I did not know of the existence of this beautiful jewel box of a museum. It was the collection of the owner of the American Singer sewing machine company. They loved Laren and the late 19th/early 20th century "second" Dutch school of painters so much that they moved there from America & were patrons of the arts.

The building itself is quite beautiful and so is the collection. Private rooms, wood paneled with glowing fires, where you can have a drink and relax. Nice gift shop and cafe. Self-service cloakroom with free lockers. Signs in Dutch and in English.

We spent a fantastic day in Laren, on a weekend that celebrated the recent addition to the museum. The museum is the centerpiece of the town, named for the American artist and Pittsburgh native who lived here with his artist wife for many years. Their personal collection was extensive and forms the base for this museum but it is much more today. We visited the Cuban Exhibit, very good. There is an outdoor sculpture garden still being fitted with sculptures. There are a number of exhibit rooms, a good cafe, a rooftop garden and now a new theatre. The village is small and delightful. The whole community turned out for the weekend festivities around the opening. The Elephant Parade came to town, WOW!
It was a great day. If you can manage a day trip, probably by car, do it.

The museum and the annex theater were rebuilt and renovated. This makes the entrance and the entertainment such as coffee corner with good seating better than before. The art part is displayed in a tasteful manner and the exhibitions (such as now, Cuban artists) are often surprising. The museum has a good giftshop.

I enjoyed the "CUBAN ART NOW" exhibition at Singer Laren. The museum is currently undergoing some construction-work expanding its theater and the sculpture and flower-gardens will be planted by designer Piet Oudolf and opened summer 2018.At the moment of my visit the sculpture gardens were temporarily covered with lawn to show the ELEFANT PROJECT. I enjoyed seeing the work of contemporary Cuban artists like Jose Emilio Fuentes Fonseca(JEFF),Ibrahim Miranda,Flavio Garciandia,Alejandro Campins and Raul Cordero. There was an exhibition of work for sale by local artists from Laren village as well.
