The meeting and ballrooms show the heritage of a grand old hotel. Guest rooms vary between wings but in the old wing are large and nicely updated. Some have views. All offer good sleep.

Wifi is complimentary (avoiding an annoying hassle in some luxury hotels). The lobby Starbucks was closed for remodeling and there was no place in the hotel to have coffee. But there is a small Peet’s fairly nearby.

While individual guest facilities were good, the quality of support for meetings in the hotel was surprisingly poor. It has large ballrooms and mansaller rooms but offers poor and exoensive support services.

Dear Craig,

We were delighted to host you during your recent visit to Chicago and are delighted that you could so wonderfully appreciate our rich history which is reflected in the design of our hotel. While some visit our hotel to get away with family, and others for business travel, our complimentary wifi makes it both easy and convenient to stay connected on the go and we are so happy that you enjoyed this amenity as well. It would be a pleasure to welcome you back to our majestic location right in the heart of it all, and if I can offer my personal assistance in coordinating your next reservation, please do not hesitate to call.

Yours Sincerely,
Jorge Landa

I was staying with a colleague in this hotel, as it was the convention venue for the annual meeting of European Studies scholars. Our immediate welcome at reception was cold and arrogant. We had booked a superior room but the desk clerk insisted on putting us in a room with a Queen bed and a fold out sofa. My colleague managed to talk to a manager and the original booking was restored, but it left a bad taste in the mouth. The room itself (in the new wing) already looked dated and fairly empty - average beds, not particularly comfortable, average bathroom. The experience was underwhelming to say the least. I'm glad that I relocated to the Loews down the road, which is cheaper, more modern, with MUCH better service and better amenities. The only thing going for the Intercontinental is its beautiful 1920s pool. Don't stay there just for the pool.

Dear Joseph,

It was a joy to have hosted you and your colleagues for your recent meeting and we thank you for investing the time to share your thoughts. We greatly appreciate guest reviews as it helps us to learn how we might have further enhanced the quality of the stay and while we trust that you could appreciate the rich history of our location, we regret that there were some other details of the stay which fell below your expectations. Although our associates are known for their warmth and gracious hospitality, we are disheartened to learn that this was not your impression upon your arrival to our hotel, and on behalf of all of us, we apologize for making you feel this way. We can only hope that you might consider giving us another opportunity to welcome you in the months ahead, as we would love nothing more than the opportunity to share an experience that we believe will capture your heart in full.

Yours Sincerely,
Jorge Landa

The location on Michigan Ave can't be much better if you're in town for sightseeing and shopping. The building itself is impressive, and has kind of a neat history as an athletic club (the pool area is restored and gorgeous). I had a very spacious room, and no complaints about it as far as amenities or cleanliness, though it was not really what I would consider luxurious. I didn't use a lot of the hotel services, but all the staff I did interact with were very nice. Honestly, my biggest gripe is that they forgot/declined to give me points for my stay until I contacted support- of all the IHG properties I've stayed at, this is literally the only hotel that failed to do what I thought was an automatic procedure.

We booked this hotel because it was the convention hotel for the annual meeting of Europeanist scholars. The room and service were fine, but it was a terrible hotel conference. They wanted to charge the organization $150,000 for use of AV equipment; for that amount of money, they could have bought equipment for every conference room multiple, multiple times.

Room Tip: Even high floor rooms do not have good view.

This hotel's location is great, higher floors have great views from the windows. The rooms are in a good condition, pretty spacious. The staff is one of the friendliest ever, real big plus here, super nice. The swimming pool is also great, although the lake/beach is in a short walking distance. We loved everything about the stay there and will definitely come back.
