Large museum with eclectic collection. The Impressionist collection is world class and Can go pound for pound with Musee D’Orsay and Barnes in caliber of collection. Modern painting collection pretty decent as well. The building itself is also quite modern and centrally located.

3 generations totaling 9 visited. All thoroughly enjoyed. Kids under 14 free— that helped as we had 4. All loved the Thorne miniature rooms. The older kids and adults loved NightHawks, American Gothic and the French Impressionist galleries. Nice snack too in a pretty cafe. Beautiful gift shop as well

I have been to the Met, the High, the Guggenhiem, MOMA, but I have to say that the exhausting day we spent at the AI was beyond wonderful.

The Art Institute is always worth a visit, with a pleasing series of temporary exhibitions anchored by very good permanent collections, particularly the French Impressionists.

I compromised with my students that if they wanted to go to a baseball game they had to go to this museum. They were dragging their feet on the way from the L. Once inside and I gave them a mission assignment to explore in pairs with chaperons, they were amazed with the art and artifacts as was I! They have student rates! You need more than an hour to do some justice.
