We loved every moment of our visit. Our aim was to relax and the moment we walked into our room, it was an absolute feeling of bliss. The rooms and grounds are well kept and the owners very helpful and friendly. The kitchen is fully equipped and extremely neat.

Stayed: December 2017

The accommodation far exceeded our expectations! The rooms were well layout and had a BIG king size bed. Upcycle and recycle in a very classic way. It was also the best equipped kitchen on our holiday. It was not very near to the sea, but we travelled by 4x4, and it did not matter. The friendly owner came to pulled out one of our vehicles that got stuck after the rains.

Super holiday with the grand kids, huge safe deck for them to play. Had a lovely local lady to clean every day which was a bonus we were not expecting. Justin and his wife were always around to help, even when one of our cars got stuck! There is a bit of a walk to the beach and estuary which was no problem for us adults, the family with the children just drove down. Would love to go back one day.

Exceeded expectations. Beautiful light, airy & spacious rooms, king size bed, open plan bathroom area(this may not be ideal if you are not travelling as a couple), simplistic tasteful African décor with a modern touch. Ample space for cooking and in fridge/freezer. Crockery & cutlery basic but sufficient, and very tasteful.

Our time was abruptly cut short at 20h30 on our day of arrival when I slipped and broke my leg in a steep muddy area after 2 days of soaking rain. I would like to thank the owner Justin, and 2 guests by the name of William and Karl, for their incredible assistance & support in what was an extremely traumatic situation. It makes one realise the importance of checking your medical cover when traveling to remote areas, and to pack a decent medical kit of your own. Thank you so much Justin for the calm and professional way in which you handled this, and a big thank you to Karl & William too.

As a result we unfortunately never got to spend the night there, but may I add a few comments from our short stay:
• The bottom of the property does not have cell phone coverage, but the top 2/3rds of the property does. This is not normally important, but it becomes vital to know in a medical emergency!
• A little car can get there, but a higher clearance SUV or bakkie is a lot more preferable.
• The beach and river mouth is a few minutes by car, it is spectacularly beautiful, and fully accessible by 4x4 only.
• We enjoyed supper on the deck outside our hut watching the full moon rise over the Indian Ocean.
• Due to the steep terrain in places I would not advise this lodge for people with mobility difficulties.
• We stayed in a rondavel at the bottom of the property with an unobstructed view, and were lucky to have the rondavel adjacent to us unoccupied (the rondavels are attached in the middle by a kitchen). Privacy may be a little restricted due to a shared deck and kitchen. Ideal for families.

On an unplanned trip through the Transkei, we impulsively booked at Swell Eco Lodge for one night and ended up staying for five! We hadn't come prepared for self-catering but Justin arranged delicious homemade meals for us, and the shop was most useful for all the other essentials we needed. The kitchen however is brilliantly stocked with everything you could possibly need for a fully self-catered holiday. Justin, Lee-Ann and their wonderful staff made for a really splendid stay in a beautiful and unique part of the world. We will certainly be back!
