Don't come during Lake Okeechobee discharges into the St Lucie River as it brings toxic blue green algae to this beach as it is next to the inlet. Once a thriving unique reef is now dead due to the pollution from excess agriculture runoff water. Google 2016 Bathtub Reef Beach green algae. 2018 looks like it's going to be the same, with polluted water black in color and toxic algae making it to the beach.

We spent the day at Bath Tub Reef Beach on 2 days and found it to be great. Facilities are close. One of the days was very windy but there were areas that were more protected and made it much more enjoyable to be on the beach. Sand is not as white as o the gulf side but there are plenty of shells to collect. Bath reef beach apparently got its name because the reef of the era where the water is totally calm and shallow, like bath tub water.

Reef protects the shore from pounding Atlantic surf. Great if you have small children. Unfortunately, parking area is currently closed due to construction, but you can access the beach from the next parking area north.
