“Less ornate stave church”

We made a brief stop here to see just the outside of this stave church. It’s plainer and simpler than the Borgund Stave Church, but it’s in a very pretty setting, and still in use as a parish church; in fact we arrived here just after a funeral ended. The church is surrounded by a small graveyard. There’s plenty of parking for cars but no bus parking, so it may be one of the quieter stave churches to visit.

We ferried across from Solvorn, which was a short and lovely ride. It's a good 20 min walk up to the church, uphill all the way. Steady gradient. The Church itself is stunning, and going inside was quite moving - something bout it being so organic and 'growing' from the ground with all its timbers. I'd sworn I wouldn't bother with cathedrals and churches anymore but this was special

The Norwegians were slow to realise what treasures these ancient churches are. As communities developed they extended and modernised many churches or abandoned them and built new ones. I think there are only 18 Stave churches left in the whole country. They are not all open to the public and to view this one a donation of 50kr (about £5) was expected to help with it's maintenance. Inside we had a very interesting explanation of its history and sturdy construction out of local pine. An impressive and yet homely church serving the community for hundreds of years.

Kaupanger Stave Church is the largest stave church in the Sogn region.
The church has been restored several times and was built on the original 11th century footprint of previous churches. Architecture, setting in the landscape and quality of craftsmanship makes Kaupanger stand out. Tours are available from mid June to mid August. The church is used as a place of worship for the community.
