Way better choices in the area

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 31 Jul 2022via mobile
We went at the end of July (middle of the winter). There are 2 cottages, and when enquiring we asked which one was the best. We were advised to take the Protea one (the most expensive for 5 nights). A few things were never mentioned: the cottage is without sun from 11:30am, whereas the other one has sun the whole day. As a result, we spent most of our time stocking up the fireplace (a prehistoric model without temperature control). A pile of logs lasts only 30-45 minutes, and keep in mind that the winter temperatures drop to close to zero. We arrived at 4pm, and nobody bothered starting the fire. The cottage is very old and badly isolated, on top of facing south (in South Africa houses are build to face north for sun exposure. The bedrooms cannot be used as the temperature in the rooms never exceeded 5-6c. Bottom line, we spent five days sleeping near the only fireplace in the kitchen/living room (this for R2000 a night). Extra firewood can be purchased for R50 a bag (nice money maker). We went through a lot of wood to just keep warm in one part of the house.
DSTV: there is a TV and a decoder but the subscription is so in arrears that they do not bother paying it. When complaining, we were told we should have brought our own card (never mentioned in various emails nor on the website). Keep in mind that many people have cancelled their DSTV subscription (like us) and rely one the internet for watching everything. No WIFI either, so if you choose a portable router, load it with tons of data (btw, only MTN has a signal here). Also bring all the condiments you need (oil & vinegar mainly) and be prepared to braii every night in the cold as the cooker is ancient. We had gas leaks, a broken fridge, and the only oil heater of the farm was broken.
One plus: the farm manager did a stellar job trying to keep us happy given what he has to work with. For the price, there are better choices in the area. I spent a lot of time travelling to remote locations Africa, Europe, US, Australia) and this is by far the worst I stayed at.

My wife, our Rottweiler and I stayed for a few nights. It is fantastic value with our own little trout damn that the dog enjoyed to swim in. Best part is the attention to detail and all the nice touches. Day trips to Dullstroom is possible too although it is best to take the tar road. Bring your mountain bike but also your climbing legs! Alternatively there are a fe nice hikes available too. It will be chilly in winter but the wood is restocked daily for the fire place and with a gas braai option on the verandah it couldn’t be any easier.

Room tip: It is self-catering and no quick shop close by so bring everything you need

The Talbot trout farm is spectacularly set in the highlands of Mpumalanga between Dullstroom and Machadodorp. Activities include fly fishing, mountain biking, hiking and birding.

The farm itself is serene and silent! Cottages are cozy and private.

Room tip: The Protea cottage is heavenly
