Signed up for a guided tour of the Turtle Hospital and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Learned a lot about the various turtles that are rescued by the hospital, how they provide medical care and rehabilitation for the turtles and then how they care for the turtles while they are recuperating for release back into the wild.
The tour started with a brief lecture and slide show that was very informative.
We then toured the medical facilities which were very impressive. The staff member was very knowledgeable and was great about answering all sorts of questions.
After the medical area tour, we went out to the tanks to see some of the little guys. They were really cute swimming in these giant crystal clear water tanks. The staff member fed them some leafy greens and it was fun to watch them eat.
After that, we went to the back of the property to some of the tanks that were holding some turtles that had been rescued as recently as the day before. It was a little sad to see them in the small tanks but they were getting great care.
Then we visited some turtles that were in a big enclosure. Many had bubble-butt syndrome. Due to injuries and the like, gas gets trapped under their shell and it can't be released, and they are unable to dive. So they are housed in a big enclosed lagoon. We were able to feed them some food pellets which was cool.
It was a really cool experience and one that I would highly recommend to anyone.
Will give you pause the next time you think about our effects on nature.
