Tadlo Lodge feels like a fairly exclusive experience without the price tag. Set alongside the river and waterfalls the dining area offers magnificent views and there are lovely areas for walking as well. The room was nicely done but let down by some sizeable holes in the sheets. We also couldn't help wondering about what appeared to be the drainage from the sink/shower into a water way in front of the buildings. Not sure whether this is good from a hygiene perspective even though this is probably only grey water.

They should be ashamed for keeping in captivity two (that i saw at least) adult elephants with chains in their legs and forcing them to stay there until some tourist shows off to see them refreshing in the river or ride them for a while.
These practices are prehistorical and should be banned from any natural environment.
Just look the happiness in their faces....

an amazing place. the most fantastic was to see Claus (the owner) with his elephants - the way they were treated - and seeing them bathing in the waterfall. this is really a place to go and experience how wild animals should be treated.
at the same time please do not ever go on elephant tours with the ethnic people in the area, marketing their elephant tours strongly on Lonely Planet. the elephants there are treated so badly. this should be stopped. we went on a tour - and ended walking back, as the elephant was so hot and thirsty that it kept trying to cool it self by taking in water from it's mouth into it's trunk - and then spraying it over it's body.

Staff have limited English and I think very little training, they look lost. We were waiting for the second half of our meal...I went to enquire...all the staff were sitting down eating their meal, no one got up.. and I was told, yes it will come soon. It wasn't really worth the wait. Breakfast was not great either! Bed was comfy, the blanket looked clean but about 20 years old, the bathroom was a little strange. Probably better value around.

Set in extensive grounds by Tad Lo waterfalls, the hotel has a number of different rooms in lodges. Some is budget accommodation at the other side of the bridge. Our rooms had ceiling fans and 3 rooms in a block. There looked to be some rooms with air con units.

The rooms were spacious with a shared balcony, with chairs and a table for each room, overlooking the gardens. No air con or safe in our room. There was a kettle in the room and tea making facilities. Large bathroom, the shower was just about OK. Mosquito nets were filled with holes!!! Sheets were clean. Blankets were basic!

Intermittent wifi, not really accessible from the room!

There are two elephants who are taken to the river twice a day for a wash, so you can watch by the river or from the balcony at the restaurant. The American working there seemed keen to discuss the elephants (including the love of his life Moon, one of the elephants). He was also happy to help in any way he could. The rest of the staff were quiet and tried to do their best.

Breakfast was variable. There was bread, but no butter. Good noodles with chicken, fresh cooked eggs, pancakes, papaya and watermelon, tea and coffee. Served in the lovely setting, on the balcony overlooking the river.

The evening meal was very slow service. Many items on the menu were not available – steak and chips were offered, but there were no chips! No crepes. Not much at all to be honest. The meals were bland and fairly non-descript (most of us felt the same). Having ordered a dish, which turned out to be a very dry meat dish (beef with lemongrass was dry and very very chewy / tough and another was pork with lemongrass and garlic – again dry). We asked for recommended accompaniment, as there were no chips or morning glory. Sticky rice was recommended, but this was far too dry and lacking flavour – sticky rice and dry meat – really did what it says and stuck to the roof of my mouth!!. When we asked for some sauce we were told there was nothing, eventually they brought chilli and soy sauce after asking three times (and asking in the local language). The meal was very expensive for Laos (much more expensive than the gourmet restaurants in Luang Prabang & Vientienne) and probably one of our least favourite in the whole of Laos. The best thing about the meal was the setting!

Other than that, the experience was lovely. The setting was beautiful and the grounds were easily accessible for a stroll by the river and waterfalls. The local Tad Lo cocktail was really good (local Lao Lao, banana rice whiskey, with honey and lemon).
