Great overall. Lockdown Breakfast poor

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 11 Jul 2021
I have stayed at boardwalk on numerous occasions and it is my go-to Hotel in Port Elizabeth. The hotel has great public areas, large nice rooms and normally a nice breakfast area and lounge area. So much so that whenever we in town we host local family there for a breakfast or luncheon. Unfortunately lockdown level 4 has gotten the better of them and my most recent stay was dissapointing. The hotel was exceptionally quiet so check in was fast and efficient. The room was very well cleaned and sanitised. The rooms at Boardwalk are nice and large and even the standard rooms are of a very high standard so this aspect was again perfect. Unfortunately there was no Breakfast Buffet due to lockdown regulations which is perfectly understandable, what did unfold though is not! Guests were asked to come serve themselves with what the wanted in the lobby and retire to their rooms to eat....The selection was ridiculously poor: 2 types of fruit, 2 yoghurts, 2 cereals, 2 pastries and eggs to order. Tea or coffee. It looked unappealing, there was a lack of basic cutlery and they had run out of the correct size lids for coffee cups so these needed to be carried open the near km to the room. Oh and no trays or any means to carry your stuff, just boiling coffee in your hands and steaming eggs melting the plastic container. I get that its hard, and I am no executive chef but frankly could have thought this through much better. Not a muffin in sight...surely the easiest thing in the world to prepare and wrap, coffee cups with correct lids, whole fruits instead of slices...the list goes on. The biggest indignity however came at checkout when my rate of nearly R2000 a night, in an empty hotel, excluded breakfast and I was charged R230 for that appalling breakfast. When I queried this at check0out the poor lady sheepishly shrugged her shoulders and said thats what they are told to do, even she saw the madness in it. I have in the past happily paid the standard breakfast rate for family to dine with us when staying there but this was daylight robbery. Such a pity. I could have stayed with family but chose to try support places that are battling through Covid lockdowns but felt let-down. PS The staff are all pleasant enough and helpful, the fault here lies with management and they need to up their game!

Room Tip: All rooms large and great, even standard rooms. Save your money and go for a standard room.

We arrived at this beautiful hotel to find out most of the hotel was still closed and only the restaurant was open for breakfast. Untrained staff didn't know times of the hotel bars opening and closing, security delivering items to the room without waiting to be let in but just entering!

Very disappointing stay and really this hotel should have stayed closed until they were ready to open with trained staff and 5 star facilites open.

Needed a 1 night hotel prior to flying back to UK early due to the virus.Booked on Hotels.com for a bargain price, on arrival was given a suite room which was magnificent. Large, roomy and comfortable. Large old style bath in a modern bathroom, what more could you want.Although hotel was empty staff where very helpful and friendly despite the fact it was closing down the next day.
Breakfast was nice and plentiful with plenty of choice.
Whats the best way of recommending a hotel...thats by going back again....which I most defiantly will.
Management please pass on a thank you to your staff they deserve it.
Please can I ask you recognise the friendly ,helpful and professionalism of Anele Muumbi he was great and a real credit to the hotel.

Quite possibly the worst hotel we have stayed in. It’s a shame because the other hotels we stayed in on our 2 week break in South Africa were first class. Too many things to mention but I wanted to say how disappointed we were with;

1. Room service first night had to wait 1 hour for a snack.

2. The only hotel bar is smoking and smells like an ashtray.

3. Homeless people asleep in the gardens in the morning.

4. Decor of the hotel dates back to the 1990’s.

And finally.

5. We asked for an extra 2 hours late checkout and the rude receptionist flatly said no and wanted to charge us the equivalent of an extra nights stay for the 2 hours. We kindly said no and she smiled at us!!!

The hotel has a nice ambiance. The room and bathroom need a little more TLC (loose taps, no proper drainage on basin) but the public areas are great. The breakfast was not was I expected from a 5* Hotel. The variety was poor, the coffee was the worsed I had in 24years of travelling as a guide (on average 7 month a year). I asked twice for an Americano, which wasn't great either. The service was slow and unefficient. The staff was desinterested. The staff at reception was very good and friendly!

Our stay at The Boardwalk Hotel was just a few days with our daughter prior to our departure flight home and upon arrival we found our daughter required medical attention so a member of the staff named Buyelwa promptly arranged for a local doctor to come to the hotel. Buyelwa was extremely prompt and caring and asked how our daughter was feeling upon departure. The doctor was equally amazing!! Great service and attention! So kind, all of the staff. Anele helped us with our taxi’s to and from various locations around PE and was most helpful. The rooms were clean and roomy (couldn’t get robes sadly), with decent views of the blue-green Indian Ocean, good laundry service and In-room dining good, the breakfasts were a great selection (buffet) suitable for anyone. I wasn’t too happy about the boardwalk shopping and restaurant area as most things were closed down I believe due to the upcoming plans for rebuilding the area. It didn’t look run down however so it was decent to walk around, same with the beach area and for those with kids check out a beach restaurant (1mi from hotel) called “Somethings Good”. Great food and drinks and safe place to play for kids and it has a small cove for beach play too!
