Many many months back, when we returning to Delhi via Jaipur highway, we were stunned to see plethora of cars near some non-descript place. Talking to our, we found it was some dhaba called “Rao Hotel”. Then we decided to visit the place and find the raison d'etre for the crowd.
Last week, returning from Neemrana, we decided to end the wait and headed towards the “Old Rao Hotel”. There was a small parking where we could find a parking. Given that it was about 3 in noon, parking was not a problem. There was a newly constructed two storey building – and we found it was the washroom only.
Adjacent to it was the main dining room where some renovation was taking place. We side stepped it and entered the main hall. Even at 3 in noon, there was hardly any place to sit. And if that shock was not enough, the seating was in form of a mess where there were long rows of chairs and tables without any privacy. It appeared as if the only thing on offer was food – proper sitting or privacy was not relevant.
We order garlic nans, roti, malai kofta and dal makhana. Food was promptly served with some complimentary salad and mint sauce. The Dal was decent; however, roti was half cooked and nan and kofta was average. This was followed by cup of tea which was pretty good. The prices were reasonable but overall experience was quite average. It appeared that possibly a once renowned dhaba had got fully commercialized and had now become a food factory. For this average quality food with poor dining experience, this dhaba could be easily given a miss.
