The view (million $$$ worth, pun intended) are amazing. I wasn't driving so my husband couldn't enjoy it like I was but he says he'll never do it again. Maybe I'll drive next time.

Twisty turns combined with switchbacks as high as 11,000 feet this road is incredible. It has NO BARRIERS on the outside edge, just a 1000 foot drop to the river below. It takes some concentration to drive it well. You'll compete with motorcycles, motor homes, and dump trucks as you negotiate these curves back and forth, up and down. It's exhilarating, but as others have said, not for the feint of heart. As they say in Silverton (9600 feet) and a must stop, "Sea level is for sissies."

If you can only go one place on your summer vacation, go to the San Juan Mountains of southeastern Colorado and drive the Million Dollar Highway. Scenic splendor will be yours every foot of this way. The Highway connects Ouray and Silverton, both some of the nicest towns in the state, and affordable places to stay. I recommend you stay in Silverton for the absolute peace and quiet, along with friendly locals. If you have a 4x4, this place is paradise, with high-mountain passes that give you views of heaven in every direction. You can also rent Jeeps in Silverton. Don't waste another vacation day anywhere else, come here!

We did the Million Dollar Highway when we stayed in Ouray. This road is not for the faint hearted. The road extends right to the edge with a large drop off in many places. It is about 12 miles long and is worth the drive. The views are spectacular and you won't be disappointed.
