Over the years, the Cheyenne, (WY) Ski Club has been involved in activities outside the realm of snow sports to keep its members involved and in touch with each other. River rafting is one of those activities. A Wanderlust Adventures in LaPorte, CO is a mere 40 mile drive from Cheyenne and offers some great Class III-IV rafting on the Cache la Poudre River, Colorado's only Wild & Scenic River.

Some years ago, we started out with the "Blast of White Water", a half day trip, then eventually began offering the full day trip to our members. The "Blast" is just that, an absolute blast!!!!! 2.5-3 hours of adrenaline pumping action on the river through the gorgeous Poudre Canyon, and navigating a variety of Class III-IV rapids under the guidance of some very seasoned and safety-minded guides. If you're lucky, you may even see some wildlife on the rocks above you.The full day trip is simply an extension of the "Blast" trip. This trip features near-wilderness solitude in the upper reaches with more Class III-IV rapids and a deli style lunch, which I guarantee everyone is ready for!!! After lunch, the group is portaged around some extremely hazardous rapids for safety reasons, then put in where the "Blast" started, and finishes the trip a few hours later.

It's hard to pinpoint any single thing that I liked best. The entire staff from ownership on down, is top notch. They're all very knowledgeable and helpful, doing their best to make your rafting experience an enjoyable one. Specifically, I found the guides to be well seasoned on the river, well trained in guiding and rescue and very knowledgeable about their jobs. In addition, we noticed at various points along the river A Wanderlust Adventures staff positioned with lifelines, should the need arise. Equipment was always in great shape.

In addition to the trip fee, an additional $10.00 gets you a wet suit, booties, splash jacket and helmet (helmet being mandatory). An additional $2.00 gets you neoprene gloves, also. I highly recommend spending the additional $2.00. Knowing water temps of the Rockies, you'll want that extra warmth.

For those with prescription glasses/sunglasses, be sure to have them attached securely so they don't get lost. Also, leave your personal camera at home; disposable cameras for the trip are available in the shop. After the trip, you'll probably have the opportunity to purchase a set of still pictures or a short movie of your personal trip (both on disc). If you're like most of us, you've been too busy paddling to worry about taking pictures. Here's your chance to remember the day for years to come.

The Cheyenne Ski Club is planning trips through A Wanderlust Adventures again this year. We hope to see you on the Poudre!
