My girlfriend and I were told about the Highway of Legends at a local dispensary in y Trinidad. The next day we decided to check it out. The trip for us started in Trinidad. It is a quiet mountain road which climbs in elevation and takes you through several out of the way communities with the scenery getting better with every turn in the road. We headed into to Denver the next day for the remainder of our trip to Colorado but this drive was the highlight of our trip. Well worth it. We took our time and this was about a three to four hour adventure for us!

This circular drive through the high mountains west of I-25 is so worth getting off the highway for a few hours, and relaxing into rural life. Start out in La Veta in June and experience incredible displays of mountain wildflowers!

A wonderful drive with beautiful and unusual scenery. La Veta is a cute "down to earth" mountain town--Cuchara is like an old western town and Stonewall has, well, a stone wall (a wondrous rock formation).

The Trail of Legends Scenic Byway is located between La Veta, Colorado and Trinidad. Highway 12 is the western section of the trail. It has an abundance of wildlife and scenic views. It is a paved road that is well maintained. Be sure to also take the road over Cordova Pass. It runs east and west between Aguilar and Highway 12. Most of this road is gravel and I would not recommend it for most cars. A truck will not have any problems. I drove it in my 4x4, but never had to engage the four wheel drive. I would not drive this road in the winter. We drove the Byway in October and the aspens were magnificent. We spent all day on the road over the pass and only saw about a dozen other vehicles. The views of the Spanish Peaks is spectacular. Be sure you have plenty of fuel before you leave town, there aren't any gas stations on the route. We will go here again.
