“Excursion through trappist brewery”

Beer Brewery de Koningshoeven
Certificate of Excellence
Attraction details
Reviewed 11 March 2017

Of the world's trappist breweries, I believe this is the only one that can be visited daily for an excursion. The excursion goes through the monastery, and along the way one learns about the brewing process, about the criteria for trappist beers, and about the history of trappists. One gets to see the kettles and the bottlery. Also the old bakery and the garden are shown, as well as the old firetruck. The cheesemaking was explained from outside the building. At the end of the tour everyone can choose one of the beers (or taste a few different beers) while watching a movie that explains the history of trappist beers again. Afterwards one can have more drinks in the cafe, or buy the monastery's products in the shop.

They brought them in smaller tasting glasses so we could enjoy a variety without overindulging! The quadrupel cheese was also delicious

The tour I had was in English by a funny and enthusiastic Dutch guide Tony. There is an intro film in Dutch with English subtitles. The tour takes you to the old brew house and bottling area but not the areas where the monks live, understandably so. The area outside was pretty with fresh snow but probably really nice in summer when you can sit outside. The beers in general are very good and most are available on draft. The tour is relatively expensive for 12 euros with only one free small beer of the choice at the end but some of the profits go to charity. Even in the middle of winter it was very busy on Saturday. The restaurant food was good and not too expensive. There are no tasting flights but the small draft beers are 20cl so you can drink these if you want to sample.

Very funny and passionate tour guide, a pretty abbey, delicious lunches and monumental trappist beers. I recommend any beer, abbey or food lover to visit the place and take the tour.

Sit down at the proeflokaal and enjoy a few of the best trappist beers this world has to offer. I have been here multiple times and was never disappointed. Great beer and great food as well. It might take some time before your food is served but this is only because the place can be crowded and the kitchen is very small.

The guided tour is worth taking if you want to learn more of the brewing process.

On your way out do yourself a favor and take home a few more unique beers and their delicious bread and cookies!
