Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: The museum is open to the public even though the museum is on an active Air Force installation. All that is required is for non-military ID card holders and groups to call us or submit a request on our web site a minimum of one day in advance of your visit (before noon MDT) to arrange for a pass and detailed instructions. (https://petemuseum.org/visitor-information/). A State or federal issued Photo ID is required for all Non-DoD visitors over 18. Drivers will need to have proof of insurance and registration for their vehicles. The Museum preserves and portrays the rich aviation and space history of Colorado Springs and Peterson Air Force Base. From our barnstormer beginnings in the Roaring Twenties, through the daring exploits of our World War II pilots and into the modern space era, our exhibits are sure to capture your attention.

I recommend anybody who has an appreciation of US Air Force aviation history make a stop here, even more so than the Air Force Academy. The exhibits are both plentiful and very well maintained.

As others have noted, it isn't the easiest place to visit and takes a small amount of effort if you do not already have a military ID. However, the payoff for that small amount of effort is fantastic. After a number of more physically challenging activities (hiking, rafting, etc...) on our family vacation, as we neared the end of our trip we looked for something a bit closer to Colorado Springs and a bit easier. I submitted the visit request just a bit over 24 hours before we hoped to tour and received my confirmation email the next morning. Getting on base wasn't too hard. We stopped at the visitor center first and were told that we could proceed to the gate where they will look up our information. After a short wait we were sent on to the museum. Once at the museum were were met by a docent who gave us a tour. Since there was an event in the main hanger, he grabbed the keys to the EC-121 Connie and gave us a personal guided tour of the aircraft. While our docent Dick wasn't one of the crew who flew on this aircraft, many of the crew continue to work at the museum. The tour got even better once the event in the hanger was over and we continued our tour there. In here we found out Dick's personal connection. He was stationed in Alaska at an early warning radar station. I won't spoil all his stories here, but it was wonderful getting a first hand account of his experiences there.

It is the personal touch that makes this place so special. In the end, it was absolutely worth the small amount of effort getting access to the base.

We really enjoyed the docent lead tours in the hangar and in the plane itself. My husband is retired Army so it was great to hear him talk about the interactions he had with some of the equipment on display!

We are military so we did not have to go through the visitors center to get a pass. We drove right onto the base to the Museum. Our docent Kay was so knowledgeable and friendly. If you love military history and/or planes- make a stop. Is it on the small side? Yes. But you can easily spend 2 hours here. And it’s free!! I highly recommend getting a tour- the staff know so many “cool” facts. My family loved it.
