Mountain View Cemetery

Unlike most cemeteries, Mountain View is alive with trails to explore, history to learn, concerts to hear and flowers to enjoy, especially during tulip season. There are tours available and if you are a Civil War or Oakland community enthusiast, you will be fascinated by the “movers and shakers” buried there right along with your neighbors.
Jazz at the Chimes is a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon, Muscicans come from all over to liven up the statues and people inside.
On Memorial Day and Veterans Day the staff makes the effort to bring people of the community together and special touches, like single red roses for the ladies, to musical tributes and speeches are evident everywhere.
My favorite is the tulip show when the best floral arrangers line the chapel with their creations usually depicting a favorite item or event.
Know the saying a view you “could die for”? Well, you don’t have to die to enjoy the spectacular views from the cemetery, just lace up those sneakers and head up the hill.
It’s the closest thing to heaven itself.

Visit Mountain View if you have a couple of hours to fill in. It is so beautiful and interesting. Collect a map from the office on the way in and then enjoy the history. Wonderful views back to the big city.

Want to escape the city noise and smells? : this vast cemetery offers miles of winding paths passing ancient stones and mausoleums. All are surrounded by towering trees with stretched out arms welcoming travelers looking for peace and quiet. Above the cemetery are high fields with expansive views of the bay, bridges and city beyond. Nature and spirits of the dearly departed combine to make this feel like a restful place where all can 'be' at home.

This place is incredibly beautiful with all the walking paths that wind up a small hill that brings you to a stunning view of the bay area! Amazing library of urns.

A friend made one phone call and got a free guide to meet us on a Saturday morning at Mountain View Cemetery. Had a wonderful 1 hours plus walk with great scenery, great views and so much local history!!! I’ve lived my entire life in the Eastbay, but almost everything the guide told us was new for me.
