You walk in, and you immediately feel like you've stepped back into a golden age, a real old-fashioned mercantile with just the right blend of antiques, locally-made products, and fun food and gifts to buy. I appreciate that the items are reasonably priced, and there's a genuinely fun and somewhat practical selection (especially in the food). If you're on a walking tour of the beautiful little main street of this historic village, this is one place that you just have to stop and check out.

It is a “mercantile”. It is in the Victorian village of Ferndale. Both things describe the uniqueness of the store. It is worth the time to look at what stores were like before the chain stores hit America

This place is a grand experience all by itself! It is a trip into the past. It feels like a real old fashioned mercantile. They offer everything right down to spats and vintage gloves. Foods and goodies from all over the world. Cajun pralines to English biscuits and curds. Old fashioned candy counter and even flour sack towels and cast iron cookware.
I spent lots of money and it was well worth every penny!

This shop is one of my favourite shops of all times and I make the time to go to it everytime I am back in Humboldt County. This shop is like going back in time back to the turn of the century with glass display cases candy in glass jars old hats. There is a small museum upstairs that is fun for the kids to look at. Shopping is done by picking up a basket and filling it. Lots of specialty foods and items to browse. I always stock up on the various soup packets that they sell. This is truly a hidden gem and the locals know and shop there. Well worth taking a trip down to Ferndale to visit.

Definitely check out the upstairs of this great little shop. They have a few display areas that show what the mercantile would have looked like when it first opened. Sewing notions, pharmacy, market, etc. It's very interesting and entertaining for the younger generations.
