Stayed 5 out of 6 days planned. But it wasn’t very comfortable. No refund to cut our vacation by one day ahead of time with full day notice. They are so desperate for folks to pay and remain they have two week cancellation policy. Now I know why. Many would check out earlier and take a loss rather than stay the days they scheduled in advance. Guests SHOULD BE WARNED rustic, (“pet friendly”), cabins are VERY HOT ALL AFTERNOON in sunny weather. Dirty old carpet, rock hard bed, not safe to leave belongings or pets in cabin. Had to buy a fan to put in window to make afternoon naps bearable. Other guests just stayed away until evening. Had clean towels, coffee, and seems plenty of dishes. Water tastes great. But ancient water faucets were very hard to turn on and off. $20 fee if you leave any dirty dishes. Road noise is unfortunately noticeable, and a droning noise thrums all night long.

The Gift shop had an older gentleman working the cash register. He was so grumpy and unhelpful. I was asking him questions about the area and flat out would not answer me. If you don't want to help customers, don't be in the customer service industry!

The restaurant was a different story. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful. The food was very good. The staff was rather slow, but that is often the case in these remote locations.

This review is for the store/gift shop, not the restaurant. Stopped by here on Memorial Day on way home from Bridgeport. We wanted to grab a couple of shirts. The store is well stocked with beer, shirts, hats, books etc. My complaint is with the unfriendly older lady working in the store. She needs to take some customer service lessons. No greeting when we entered. We purchased two shirts. At the end of the transaction I said, “Thank you, have a great day!” Not a word from her. Not a “you’re welcome,” or even “you too!” Just silence.

This store caters to tourism so I would think a friendly attitude would go a long way. In looking at other reviews, one mentioned the same “crabby” older lady in the gift shop from Memorial Day of 2017. So this wasn’t just someone having a bad day.

Stopped on our way to Mammoth. They have a good menu and a fun bar scene full of locals. The burgers were good and Thursday is taco night. Heads up, they usually close around 8, call ahead.

We stayed at Tom's Place before backpacking trip into Sierras. Very convenient location, just a few miles from the Rock Creek trailhead into John Muir Wilderness. Rustic place, small rooms, nice lounge in our lodge with books and couches. Restaurant was excellent--had dinner there, big breakfast and also stopped again for breakfast on our way out of the mountains. Lodging very inexpensive, about $60. Rustic fishing resort, no WI-Fi, no phone. Definitely a California icon--it was packed at dinner and breakfast hour the 3x we ate there.
