We make a point of enjoying Skip's pizza with friends when we're revisiting Clayton where we used to live. It's a great restaurant for families and friends and we have always sat outside even in winter under their heaters. The recent renovation was much needed indoors and looks great. Love their salad and their pizza is delicious. Their wine list has greatly improved. Can't wait to return with our Clayton friends.

The setting is first rate, especially during the East Bay's extra long outdoor season. It's marvelous to sit outside on a warm evening with the relaxing ambient lighting, happy families all-around, and people playing Bocce Ball next door. Having a brewski or two and some Za. Life is good. With Mt Diablo and East Peak towing behind Skipolini's Pizza in Clayton it's probably as close to the feeling of being in a "mountain town" as we have in the East Bay. Yep, 5 stars for that.

Ah, but the pizza. It's only 3.5 stars. It used to be 4, even 4.5 stars but the last couple of years the amount, and maybe even the quality, of ingredients has been evaporating. My reference pizza at every pizza joint is extra cheese, sausage and mushroom. The single variable is roasted garlic. And I'd be derelict in my duties if I didn't also use as my frame of reference our favorite pizza place, which is located between Walnut Creek and Clayton. The pros of Skipolini's Pizza. The crust, it is excellent. The toppings taste very fresh and you can see that they are through the glass into the kitchen. The sauce is very good, not too sweet, a sin which mars to many otherwise good pies. Our latest pizza, as usual, was cooked well, may just a minute too short but darn close to right on. The cons: lack of cheese. An EXTRA cheese pizza had what most folks would clearly say was a lack of cheese. No excuse for this one. The mushroom and especially the sausage toppings were definitely on the light side. Sausage itself lacks flavor. I completely understand that most pizza places skew towards kids and blander fair but the sausage was really plain.

Value. Not a lot happening here. A large pizza was about 30 bucks and insult to injury; it's not that large.

Salads are good at Skipolini's and I have tried most of them. Like the pizza sizes, the portions are none too generous however.

The pizza at our favorite local place, in comparison, has way more cheese and the cheese is more flavorful. Plus our favorite spot's pizza includes much more flavorful sausage and a more generous helping of mushrooms. The crust at our favorite spot has better texture but not quite the taste of Skipolini's crust. And Skipolini's sauce is a touch less sweet and probably better. You get a lot more bang for your buck at our favorite place too.

I will also mention that the food at the Walnut Creek Skipolini's location is very similar to the Clayton Skipolini’s but neither Walnut Creek Skipolini’s nor the location of our favorite spot comes close to the outdoor setting of the Clayton Skipolini's. Go for the location, stay for the pizza?

Pizza pie best when eaten fresh and hot out of the oven with your favorite beverage or for take-out. Skipolini's is only open for dinner after 4pm Mon-Fri and after 11:30 am on weekends. Has an in-door and a large out-door eating area with a play area for kids and full bocce ball courts for the adults. Great place to spend an afternoon with kids, family and friends.

Skips is legendary around these parts. It has been recently redone and really provides a great atmosphere to enjoy other's company. We like the pizza - we prefer the think crust. The black and white is our favorite. So yummy! Watching or playing bocci on the courts next door is great fun and people watching.
