“Golden Wedding Celebrations”
Reviewed 10 October 2016 for a stay in September 2016

We booked The Old Hall to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary. We were greeted on arrival by Janine the owner who gave us an extremely warm welcome and after giving us a guided tour of the house and gardens complete with the history she gave us a delicious chocolate cake and champagne all ready we were feeling spoilt. Our guests all family consisted of 14 adults and 3 children aged from 15 months to 69 years of age. As each family arrived they all commented on the amazing house with such a wow factor and on entry were lost for words. Every room in the house was luxurious from the beds and bedding to the cushions on the sofas you couldn't ask for more. During our stay we had a Friday night BBQ around the pool house, a celebratory banquet in the banqueting hall on Saturday evening by candlelight and a big roaring fire, with vintage champagne and fine wines, and on Sunday we had a buffet plus a curry. The grounds are amazing and so well equipped for all ages with swimming pool, table tennis, tennis court, croquet, skittles and so much more. The house is equipped to a very high standard, the children's room is great for all ages and well stocked with toys books and games. The kitchen is very well equipped also and is a very nice area to spend time in from sitting around the huge table chatting to eating a full english breakfast. Before we left we decided to bring our family back next year for a big birthday celebration.

“Fabulous historic house and garden for Summer family get-together”
Reviewed 11 September 2016 for a stay in August 2016

Visited for 3 nights with extended family (4 people over 70, 6 people in their 40s, 9 under-23s; the youngest is 10). Janine was very relaxed about us bringing a 19th person, and set up a camp bed in one of the "dressing rooms" which had its own door into the corridor, and a door separating it from the rest of the "suite" - perfect.
We had a fantastic time. The housekeepers had prepared for us really well, for example they had set up an outdoor dining table with the right number of chairs for our party. There were fresh flowers in the house and useful kitchen supplies like olive oil. We did all our own cooking and (once we found everything!) all the equipment we needed was there. I'm not used to an Aga but it was good for such a large group. There were 2 big fridges, so the enormous Waitrose delivery just about fitted in. We could all sit down to eat together either outside or in the beautiful beamed hall.
The weather was hot so the swimming pool was in constant use and also the tennis court, and the big garden for games of cricket, frisbee and tree climbing. The teenagers enjoyed watching DVDs in the separate "thatched pavilion" after dinner. The outdoor table-tennis was popular too. There isn't much choice of things to do if it was raining, although there are lots of sitting rooms, and a library if you forgot to bring something to read. The garden is enormous, with lots of different areas to explore, and beautifully maintained.
The only downside was not enough showers. Nearly the whole group ended up having a rota to use the only walk-in shower, which is part of the "master bedroom suite". No shower in the pool changing room, and the other two showers in the house are over deep baths which are not so easy for the older members of the group to climb in and out of. The "family bathroom" on the top floor has a bath, no shower. Even if you're happy with baths, if you have the house full, the "en-suite" bathrooms have to be shared as there is only one "family bathroom" for 12 bed-spaces without en-suites. The bathrooms all have doors to the corridor so it works OK.
I think it would be cold in the winter. The authentic leaded-light windows look draughty. If you like old houses you will really enjoy it, there's such a feeling of history, and the furniture is very much in keeping with the house. It was too warm for log fires when we visited, but plenty of logs were provided.
We had a walk around some local footpaths but otherwise just enjoyed the house and garden for our stay. It's a peaceful village and the church is unlocked if you want to look round.

Liked best: House has so much character. Swimming pool was great. Space for garden games.

“brilliant and luxurious house with beautiful grounds”
Reviewed 10 September 2016 for a stay in July 2016

This is one of the best houses we have ever stayed in. We are a group of families with teenagers and we were all delighted with it. Every bedroom is so comfortable and there are loads of bathrooms. various combinations of teenagers came and went and there was accommodation for everyone. The owner went out of her way to make this possible and welcomed us with delicious homemade cakes and champagne.
The gardens are fantastic. We hardly left the house as there was so much to do, swimming, tennis, croquet. Lots of games for rainy days and a brilliant dorm room for kids with a big screen to watch movies on. Fantastic!

A group of 20 of us stayed at the Old Hall in May 2016. It was a truly splendid setting. The house and grounds are absolutely jaw-dropping. I believe it's the most impressive property I've ever been to; let alone stayed in. If you go in a decent-sized group it's also very reasonably priced. We also managed to catch the Saxlingham Nethergate Ale Festival, which was a great laugh and a fun way to meet the rest of the village!
