“Log cabins are dangerous”

Mountain Sanctuary Park
Reviewed 30 July 2018

While the nature is beautiful, we have had a serious issue with our log cabin. The windows sill just above the batch tub has tiles that are protruding by about 7 cm above the bath tub itself. One of our kid ended up at Rustenburg ER to get 7 stiches on his back. The bill was for our own account.

This place is so special - its my favourite place near Gauteng. Its beautiful in mid winter and beautiful all year around. It is only for people who have a passionate love of nature and who want to be somewhere exceptionally special but still close to Gauteng - the huts are rustic just one up from camping but have everything you need that a tent cannot provide without overdoing anything. Don't go if you love time share type accommodation. This is for people who want to be outdoors and just don't want to lug with them tents and sleeping bags etc. Its great if you have people in your party that cant walk as far as others - very old or young or sick and or those who just have a good book to read and want to read or work or do shorter walks whilst the rest of the party go for longer walks. the walks are spectacular and the length depends on the time you have. But in 2 hours you can go with fairly unfit people and be in amazing sights. In 3 and 4 hours its even better. All day with a permit into the gorge is better still. But all are lovely. The park is owned and run by a couple who are totally dedicated to protecting nature and sharing it with as many people as they can without placing the reserve at risk. i have so much respect for them and their staff. For the decisions they have made on how much to keep natural and how to sustain it with minimum development ( a mistake so many people make when they try and make a living). The owners of this land have proven you can sustainably manage and share your land to help others in multiple ways. They certainly have made Gauteng an exciting place to be for many generations of my family. I will always keep this place dearest to my heart.

Management does a great job of restricting numbers, so that guests can enjoy the peace and quite in this beautiful setting. There are lovely mountain walks and the paths are clearly marked.
The campsites are large and the ablutions clean and well maintained.
Pity that the invasive alien vegetation is not properly controlled. If uncontrolled the reserve's precious mountain pools and streams will be choked in this water constrained area.

If you want a quiet relaxing experience this is it. The only way to make it more quiet and relaxing is to ban small children (but apparently that's frowned apon). Big stands (not the mist shade) clean, spacious bathrooms with warm water. Will definately come again. I will strongly suggest management spell out the cost as an extra vehicle cost was involved(saw that on the invoice/quote) but was surprised at the extra cost of the caravan after specifically asking. Still worth it.

We had such a marvelous weekend! The campsites are spacious and clean, the ablutions are old but they clean! And Everyone was helpful and kind!
With our campsite situated in the mountains, it was relaxing and tranquil, definitely a Sanctuary! We did ALL the hikes and swam everywhere we could :) from potholes to the natural slides to the rock pools! We will definitely be visiting there soon! What a gem!
