“Beautiful Cabarete VillaHarty makes for Blissful Vacation in the Republica Dominicana”

After early fits & starts, the rental process was very easy going. Shirley Harty contacted me personally after we made the initial deposit. Flexible in terms of making final payment, & great communication about the house, the location, any information we requested. The house is about 20 mins from the Puerta Plata airport (POP).

The pictures of the house & property are accurate though barely do the villa justice. The place is lovely.! I dont think this house would be easy for folks with mobility limitations, as there are many steps to get up to get from the car port to the house proper.,also from house to the pool & beach; the pictures show this. The house is in East Cabarete, away from the uber busy town itself, at the end of a not busy road. The peaceful surroundings offer a blissful, restful vacation. We never worried about security because of the 24 hour presence of Luis & Francisco, as well as the gated wall around the house.

The villa is older with some obvious disrepair but it is also architecturally beautiful, lots of windows with plenty of light, & plenty of space for all to spread out. The property is huge, with an detached BBQ area & a sentry like area up the stairs from the BBQ . In the house proper, we loved the large covered veranda & the equally large pool, replete with the sound of the ocean & the lovely breezes! The only thing missing is a hammock.
The veranda is excellent place for meals, social hours, relaxing with WiFi, books or napping, located right off the kitchen & main living area. The washer & dryer are around the corner on the veranda, with clothes line for natural air drying if preferred. Some issues w items in the kitchen.. the microwave a puzzle to use, toaster doesn't work. Plenty of drink cups, dishes, pots & pans. Could use a bit more cutlery. No dishwasher. Fridge sufficient. Buy bags of ice! There is a large cooler we used on the veranda, & the beach. Helps keep the fridge door closed too.. key in hot humid area. Bring your favorite spices, or purchase them in the local markets.
The indoor living area is good sized, seating a bit limited. There is a flat screen TV. Bring an HDMI cable to run Netflix or your own movies/shows from your computer. There is no satellite so TV station choices are local & limited. We also brought a bluetooth speaker & connected to Pandora using the very reliable WiFi, so we had music in the house & on the veranda. Using the WiFi, we connected to Whats App (or similar apps) on our mobile phones made for free texts & phone calls back to the US.

In the 4 huge bedrooms, all of the beds are very comfortable as are the numerous pillows. Plenty of closet space and linens. The fresh, clean all-cotton sheets & blankets are a joy to wrap up in at night. The rooms each have their own remote controlled AC. Screens are lacking so if you prefer fresh air, be prepared with insect repellent. The 4 en suite bathrooms are all huge, with beautiful tiled showers. There is a 1/2 bath off the kitchen area. The 2 downstairs bedrooms are inter-connected, with a door between them which can be locked. Each bedroom with own bath. These rooms are below the main floor, and accessed only from the outside. They were obvious choices for our 2 teenagers who felt independent staying away from the parents. :)

The villa is very well stocked with bath towels & numerous large absorbent beach towels, a large cooler for the beach. You can easily move a couple of the pool loungers to the beach if wanted. There is a handheld shower near the pool to rinse off the sand. The pool is super size & a very appealing place to float away the day. You can buy floaties in the local supermarket, & Luis will pump it up for you.

Judy, the property manager contacts you by email before your arrival with directions to the villa, & arranges for Luis to greet you at the property with the keys. She also checks in with you by phone (the house has a landline) during your stay. We were met at the house by Luis, the daytime caretaker. House staff Lily, Luis & Francisco are super nice people, reliable & trustworthy. (Conversation is much easier if you speak a bit of Spanish). Lily comes in each day to clean the house, including making or changing bed linens, doing laundry, cleaning the kitchen, etc. .We considered the staff as family while were there. Lily cooked for us one day, after consulting on menu & necessary items, we did the shopping. We all enjoyed a delicious meal on the veranda. (Lucky choice of the day as it was overcast so no one felt a need to get to the beach). Please think about tipping them before you leave, all 3 do valuable jobs at the house, keeping your vacation simple, relaxing & safe.

As mentioned above, the house may or may not have spices & items you prefer. We brought certain basic things with us (coffee, tea, salt, other snack items) though anything you may want can probably be found in either of the 2 local supermercados. Ice can be gotten at the Texaco station you pass on the way to the house, also at the supermarket, tho I cant recall if it was both of them.

The gorgeous BEACH is a very short jaunt down a gated natural footpath. The foliage between the house & beach keeps the wind from being a direct hit while you're at the house. Beach is relatively empty, there is a private home to the right, smaller hotel (Celusima ) to the left. Miles of beach in either direction. Water is lovely, but the waves can be intimidating. There is no lifeguard.

We traveled into Cabarete & Sosua just about every day & evening (dinners) & for supermarkets. Janet's in Cabarete is close & sufficient tho Super Pola in Sosua has a much larger selection. Liquor & beer are sold in the supermarkets. I
I prefer Sosua for its restaurants & the layout of the town. Choice places for lunch & dinner include Bologna (Italian), Bailey's( pizza & diverse menu!), Maruai Mai (international diverse 1# lobster tails!). Sosua's public beach is a pleasant way to get a flavor of the local culture in a beautiful natural setting. Just up the tree-framed footpath ask for guys Super Mario & Luigi, who will take great care of you & your family when you rent beach loungers from them. (see my other reviews), If you prefer self service, there are many places on the beach to choose from for food & drink.

Cabarete town is a bit crowded stuffed onto the main road & driving can rile the most experienced! An easy ride about 2 miles up Road 5 on the right, is a very comfortable casual place for drinks & delicious food. The Goddess Beach Club, part of the Kite DreemHotel & Kite Surf school offers delicious & varied choices at very reasonable prices. Plenty of on street parking. Owners Jaime & Duane on premises are very social guys! Jaime prepared an amazing (private) BBQ dinner for us one night, including Jerk chicken & BBQ ribs. Menu items are well done & varied, drinks are generous. Ask for a Passion Fruit juice margarita! Muy bueno!
As for Cabarete itself, other than the secluded beautiful Hideaway Beach (on the way to Sosua, off rd 5, look for large sign on the right) we didn't explore any beaches or off roads around the town, so no doubt we missed some wonderful spots!

As an aside,we recommend folks consider renting a car ( a must we thought) from OK MOTORS, on the Rd 5 in Sosua. (On the way to the Villa Hardy). They beat the airport based name brands by over half the price, including insurance. Greeted us at the airport, no hassles at all with car delivery & return, quick stop at their office to complete paperwork, & we were off. Reserve in advance with no cash down, they meet you at the airport w your car. We paid $307 for 7 day rental of 7 seater SUV (Suzuki Grand Vitara) including insurance, & ok for other drivers w/o extra charge. The car arrives with empty tank & you return with same.

The week we stayed at the Villa Harty went by so fast! I hope we're able to return to the Villa Harty sometime in the near future...there is so much yet of the DR I want to explore! But it was hard to get folks to rally, given how beautiful & relaxing the Villa Harty is!
Thank you Shirley & Peter.

“A fantastic stay for a comfortable beach holiday”

Villa Harty is all we (a group of 8 friends) wished for during our two week beach and surf holiday.

The house is clean and spacious.
The interior and furniture isn't the newest, but again clean and comfortable. we didn't come here for style and trends.
The pool, garden and idyllic walk to the beach exceeded all our expectations.
The crew is super friendly, but don't expect them to understand or speak english.

The house is located in a quiet town called Camino del Sol. It's 5 minute away from busy Cabarete. Camino del Sol is pretty deserted and seemed to have suffered by the global crisis, so don't expect too much activity on walking distance. Rather enjoy that silence and take a taxi to Caberete for food, drinks and dances.

Thank you Villy Harty for a fantastic holiday!

“Beautiful Beach Getaway”
Reviewed 25 January 2016 for a stay in May 2015

This house was amazing! Great layout and location. It feels secluded (the garden and pool area are incredible!) but you're right on the beach with a town nearby! My friends and I had a great time. Thank you for sharing your house!

“Great Place”

We had an amazing time here at this villa , all our family members enjoyed the time here during our stay. Kids loved the pool and ocean right in front of the house. The staff Luis, Francisco, and Lily were very helpful and it was like icing on the cake as they responded immediately with any questions. Lily was great cooking breakfast, authentic lunch and dinner for the family for a very cheap price. She loved the kids and enjoyed the time with them. She was very emotional when we left. Grill space was great and we have a great barbeque time ( luis helped each day with clean and firing the charcoal). Francisco ( house guard) always there and ready when we came home late from visiting the tourist spots . All the good spots like Damajagua fall, blue lagoon, sosua beach, telferico (cable car), zip line - monkey jungle , rum factory, local shopping outlets are very close to this villa ( 1/2 - 2 hours maximum). There are some excellent bars and restaurants nearby the house. But we loved the local dishes which Lily cooked for us. Truly a nice place and I recommend this place to all.

Cannot wait to go back to DR again and stay at the Villa.!!

We rented this Villa for a bachelor party. We had an amazing time. This was totally private and we made some noise ! The backyard was a beautiful private beach ! The pool was amazing ! I have nothing bad to say about this place. It is located 15-20 mins away from the main spots, but the driver is awesome and will take your group where you want to go whenever you want to go there. We left a little mess at night time, by the time we woke up the maid made it clean. Sherily and Judy the managers of the villa were also very helpful. I would recommend this spot to anyone. D.R. is a beautiful country. We had a Blast !
