“Magestic architecture!”

Baiturrahman Grand Mosque
Ranked #1 of 44 things to do in Banda Aceh
Certificate of Excellence
Attraction details
Reviewed 17 February 2018 via mobile

This mosque is huge and magestic, and located in the middle of town, close to Pasar Atjeh.

Although it is for muslim prayers, it is open to everyone to visit. There is no entrance fee, but any donation is very much welcome.

There is underground parking, just like a shopping mall! And it is also through this underground parking that you can access the mosque's grounds.

You do need to dress modestly. Women need to cover their heads with a scarf, no bare arms, and legs need to be covered. If you did not wear appropriate clothing, there is a counter at the entrance where you can borrow some garments. You also need to leave your slippers/sandals at the counter and walk barefoot.

The floors inside and outside the mosque are made from marble. There are beautiful arches in the mosque, with chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. It is well airconditioned.

Although there are no barriers, the front portion of the mosque is for men, and the portion behind is for women. You should avoid walking directly in front of anyone praying.

It is very beautiful, and eventhough there are crowds there, you will feel an inner tranquility. A must do in Aceh.

When I finished my KKN in Sabang for two month. I already back to Banda.
first destination was baitturrahman grand mosque!
so unique, so huge, so beautifull, masyaAllah
this mosque reminded us to keep our faith, to believe in Allah, and to believe that Allah will protect us unconditionally.
big disaster, tsunami, destroy all the building in Banda at that time, but baiturrahman still stand bravely.
you should visit baiturrahman grand mosque when you stay in Banda :)
(ps: for a woman, you must wear a hijab and long dress, or you cant enter the mosque)

Amazingly, this mosque somehow withstood the devastating earthquake and tsunami that levelled all of Aceh. It is a must-see if you are in the area, even if you are not Muslim! Non-Muslims should be respectful to cover up: ladies cover your hair with a scarf and wear long pants/skirt, men please wear long pants. It's important to be mindful and respectful of local customs and conduct, even if you don't share those beliefs. White folks and westerners will likely get some curious stares or people who want to take a picture with you--just smile and roll with it!
The architecture is stunning, with marble tile throughout and ornate interior of the mosque.

Pro tip: ladies, do not walk all the way to the front of the mosque into the male prayer section. All travellers, do not take pictures of people praying, it's just poor form

Went for Maghrib and Isyak prayers. Good to place to hang and see your days pass by.
For non muslim, please dress moderately and cover your hair (ladies). No shorts for guys.
For Muslim, enjoy the breezy Masjid Square. Perfect for selfies.
