My safari travel company teamed up with a yoga company, YogaKoh, for a 6 night yoga and safari retreat at African Bush Camps' newest camp, Khwai Bush Camp. Any expectations I had were far exceeded.

The staff was simply one of the best I've come across. Extremely friendly, outgoing, and hardworking. It would be unfair to just mention one staff member; all are worthy of great praise. The food was EXCELLENT. The cooks obviously take great pride and care in their art. The rooms were always clean. The camp always clean and tidy.

It is a well-managed and clean camp. The accommodations are perfect for a safari camp. Everything you need and everything you do not need. There are outlets, fan, and good lighting for after dark in all the chalets. The beds are extremely comfortable. Large bathrooms with with hot and cold running water are also well stocked with soap, shampoo, and conditioner. The sliding screen doors open up to your back porch that overlooks a vast plain that always had wildlife present.

The setting under large leadwood trees provided shade and was open enough to allow the breeze to pass through camp. Birds rang in the new day. Lions roared at night. The pool area and deck was perfect for our daily yoga sessions and workshops. Members of the staff and our guide also joined us during our daily practices.

One name I must mention is our guide, Ken. African Bush Camps is known for their great guides and Ken definitely lived up to those standards. Super knowledgeable, kind, passionate, enthusiastic, patient, and just an overall great person are just a few ways I would describe Ken. Over our 6 days, he never tired and was always ready to adjust to our needs, start times, and flexibility to alter our daily schedule.

The safari vehicle is well designed, comfortable, and sits a bit higher up than most other safari vehicles I have experienced. They are newer and are maintained in excellent shape. Yet just another example of African Bush Camps attention to detail and to the things that make a safari successful.

We also took advantage of the other activities offered by the camp; walking safaris and mokoro (dug out canoe) trips. They offered a quiet and peaceful way to experience the bush. The game drives were very successful and are the best way to find the diverse wildlife of the area.

January is considered the green season, often unfairly referred to as the rainy season. It is not a monsoon season like one experiences in southeast Asia. When it rains, it is in the form of an awesome thunderstorm. We only encountered storms on two afternoon game drives and it did not have any negative effect on our experience; it enhanced it with stunning skies that would offer any artist the perfect backdrop for a painting. Also, the wildlife became much more active since the rains cooled the air.

The wildlife viewing was excellent (though I do believe one should not expect to see all that we did). We saw everything we hoped to see including large groups of elephant, lion, leopard, wild dog, hyena, giraffe, buffalo, hippo, zebra, impala, lechwe, and more. We were even able to do a night drive where we saw some of the more elusive nocturnal wildlife. Sometimes wildlife viewing can be a bit more challenging during this time of year due to the green and lush landscape's ability to hide animals, but one thing about this time of year is the lack of people you come across during game drives. There were times we had lion and leopard all to ourselves without other safari vehicles crowding the sighting as one would expect during the much busier dry season.

African Bush Camps has other properties in Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. If you want an authentic safari experience, look no further than African Bush Camps.
