With low water in the river up to Angel Falls we were forced to walk across land to negotiate a set of rapids. The landscape was unexpected given that most of the area is rainforest and plateaus. This looked more like an African savanna.

I visited Venezuela touring around by myself in Venezuela, visiting town of Coro and the Medanos dunes National Park on the Caribbean coast in Falcon state in the far NW, Caracas and backpacked in the Avila Massif as far as Pico de Naiguata at over 9000', Merida in the western part with the 3 station French built cablecar up to the shoulder of Venezuela's highest peak Pico de Bolivar at over 16,000' and down for the night on donkeyback to the drier Los Nevados village. Of course I took an overnight bus to Santa Elena with a tour group up Roraima. The accommodations was in a cave called The Hotel. Here there was no privy which resulted in the disagreeable smell from having to relieve oneself in the bushes. How is it today? The summit of Roraima is a fantastic botanical world until itself if you can stand the lack of facilities at "The Hotel". Still Roraima is worth it and the porters from the village in Gran Sabana are very dedicated to their task.

We spent a little over a week in the Gran Sabama, a wilderness area in Venezuela. The landscapes are stunning, and all of the locals are really really friendly and thrilled that tourists are still coming to visit. There are a number of nice waterfalls to see (not as big as Angel Falls, but well worth seeing anyway). We traveled by camping car, but this can be done by tours as well.

Doing it yourself is cheap (i.e. no fees to most waterfalls), exciting and magical.
