It hold a large collection of art masterpieces. A lot of rooms are closed though. What a pity. They need to open more rooms. No permanent exhibitions here.
It has the potential to be one of the best museums in Latin America.

At the beginning, this museum was called MACSI (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Sofia Imber) but, during Chavez's government and because he was against the "misnamed" oligarchy he decide to take it from Mrs. Sofia Imber -who was a very reknown art curator and artistic person- and rename it.
While doing this, the museum lost a lot of its paints and sculptures; the quality decreased and even some paintings where stole. Masterpiece showcase right now are just a remembrance of what it used to be.
The attention is bad though, however not sure you'll find that many people qualify to explain or talk about the art.

Arguably the most complete ( if not largest ) collection of modern ( 20th century ) art in Latin America. Admission is free, go directly to see the permanent collection : works by Picasso, Braque, Monet, Marisol Scobar, Cezanne et all, one next to the other.
If there's any "current expo" simply skip it. Chances are it will be a mediocre work to celebrate the ( imaginary ) glory of dead ex-president Chavez , or even worst, any of his fellow partners.
Also be aware that the surrounding area is quite dangerous. Dont carry cameras / phones / etc. in the streets. The building complex in wich is located ( Parque Central ) is a fine example of todays Venezuela : a once rich in resources country for opportunity, growth, developpment and hope, has become a ruined down, debris filled, crime ridden, crippy no man's land. Thanks Chavez, this is the result of his "glory". Defenetely worth a visit.
*** 2 blocks away there's the "Plaza de los Museos", several museums in a pretty architectural complex, with same hints : look for the old, permanent collections, and avoid any Chavez related, current expo.

One of the top attractions of the city in particular for those with a thirst for culture; after visiting you could take a walk to the Museo de Bellas Artes, and complement your cultural day tour.

this museum was developed by Mrs Sofia Imber and her husband. she began inviting many artists from europe and local so it was well known and people like carlos cruz diez Mr Stone from UK. exposed their work. it is well located because it is near teresa carreno theater and science museum , etc. So if you have a free day you may visit these four places.
