Owner description: The island's famous moai statues were carved from the volcanic rock of this mountain and are scattered across its slopes in various stages of completion.

This site of the factory of where the statues were made is a must see. There is considerable hiking up and down stairs but the sites and vistas are worth it. Seeing so many of these statues all in one place was terrific

This is definitely the best place to visit on the island. Once you visit this one, all the others are not that exciting anymore...

Stellar site to see. We had the good fortune of going twice, since it was a poor weather day on the first visit.

I did not realize you can go into the crater (on the other side) as well, which is quite beautiful.

Visiting this site really gives you perspective on how the Maori statues were created. I could not believe the size of Te Tokanga, the largest Maori head on the island. Although it is still lying down on a slope, unfinished (apparently they realized that it was not possible to erect and transport), it is over 70 feet in length and 200 tons. Amazing!

There is a large gift shop at this site, but just as expensive at the other major souvenir shops in town.

This is the quarry from which all the moais on Easter Island are supposed to have been made. This hill is inside the National Park area on Easter Island & requires you to buy an $80 ticket at the airport to enter. The nice man at the gate told us about the kind of rock that the hill is made of & the tools used to make the moais. There are 2 paths to follow- one that you climb to go see the crater at the center of the mountain & the other that you take to go see all the unfinished moais. On the first path, you walk in gorges on the hill to get to the crater. Its a pretty sight with water in the center and the surrounding hills dotted with moais. The other path gives you many more opportunities to see moais up close & also enjoy a beautiful view of the sea. It has been conjectured that moais were created in a section close to the top, made to 'walk' down the hill & taken to the ahu (platform) in Ahu Tongariki & other areas. In the process of moving the moais, if they broke or fell down, they were abandoned at the spot, and hence the hill is dotted with moais in different poses.
