Owner description: The island's famous moai statues were carved from the volcanic rock of this mountain and are scattered across its slopes in various stages of completion.

Rano Raraku was the quarry where they sculpted the moai. This was my favorite part of the island, with the heads scattered around the side of the volcano where they are cut from. The moai can be found in various stages of construction. Don't miss the short walk to the inside of the crater where there are a few more moai (but you aren't allowed to get close to them any more).

We spent several hours here. There is a lot to see especially if you have a good guide who can explain and point out all the areas. The caldera view shows several statues on the back side of the mountain quarry as well.

Best to visit with a guide who can explain what is known about the maoi making and transporting to other sites on the island. Requires some walking but can be done by most people at a slow pace. Is very interesting and is a good backup to understanding the other maoi seen on the island. Is close to Tongariki so do both same day preferably this one first.

The must-see sight on Rapa Nui. You will need to take your park entry ticket for stamping. Allow 3 hours - best with a guide. And try to visit the crater where there are more moai.
