“Quite magical...”

Scotland boasts some of the most beautiful scenery in the world and, sadly, some pretty ordinary accommodation. The Broch is the complete antidote to ordinary accommodation and quite simply one of the most lovely places we have ever stayed. Stunning contemporary design, wow! kitchen and bathroom, wood burning stove in the living room, four poster in the bedroom, floor to ceiling windows on each the three floors. Perfectly complements this magical island which has so much else to offer - beaches of the very highest quality at Luskentyre, Borve and Scarista, St Cuthbert's Church at Rodel, The Stones of Callinish, the Arnol Blackhouse, Carloway Broch, the must see Mission House studio, as many walks as you could wish for (check out Walk the Highlands website for details), dinner at Scarista House just two miles down the road (they will run you back afterwards) - though the Broch is so lovely you might prefer just to stay there all day instead. Drive (ferry from Uig on Skye to Tarbert) or fly (daily flights from Glasgow to Stornoway then hire a car) but make a point of staying at least 3 days as anything less would be a serious mistake. Been twice now and will return.

“Beautifully unique, romantic and welcoming”

Elegant but massive walls curve up over a linteled passage which leads to the entrance of this fabulous building. The amazing architecture is evident both inside and out where the contemporary reinterpretation of an ancient form makes you feel you are uniquely privileged to be staying in some warm and über comfortable art work. Every detail is beautifully realised and visually exciting; from the elliptical kitchen and dining room on the lowest floor up the cantilevered staircase to the romantic four-poster bedroom on the topmost floor where you can lie snug on a stormy night and listen to the weather beat against the windows.
The light is always changing on Harris and looking out from the Broch on the edge of Atlantic vastness, the sea is luminous over pale sand even in wild weather. However, most days we were treated to sunshine pouring in through the huge windows and could enjoy breakfast coffee on the warm terrace in the shelter of deep stone buttresses.
On our arrival a very generous basket of goodies which included the coffee (and fresh vegetables from the garden) had been waiting in the kitchen for us. Part of the exceptional care and welcome that the estate extended to us all during our stay at the broch.
This is definitely one of the most beautiful, romantic and welcoming places we have ever stayed in.

“One of the most beautiful places in the world”

We stayed at the Broch for three nights in June and I am delighted that I can now review it as it was a truly incredible holiday. The Broch is completely modern, but carved out of the Harris landscape in a way which is entirely sympathetic to the surroundings. It is built rather like a lighthouse and the amazing thing about the way it has been created is to give you completely different views and experiences from each floor. Even on the top floor, the bedroom floor, the view from each window is unique, one framing the blue sea and white sands, another the lodge of the estate and yet another the purple heathers and moorland of Harris. The Broch was built with a grant from the Scottish government, presumably to encourage tourism to Harris, and I would say it has more than succeeded. I have raved about the house, the attitude and friendliness of everyone we met on our all too short trip to the Western Isles, the food from the Estate kitchen garden, the lobsters straight from the sea which the lovely housekeeper arranged for her dad to bring back from his evening catch, the walks on miles of stunning coastline and the architectural brilliance of the building itself. I cannot recommend it enough. Thank you to the whole of the Borve Lodge Estate for embarking on such a venture and making the experience of Harris such a fantastic one. It might be pricey but it is worth every penny, save up for it!
