“Attrocious - no words decsribe how bad this experience was.”

This happened only 2 hours ago, so this is being written down whilst still fresh.

I booked this cottage in good faith for a week's stay on the island. We paid in advance by direct bank transfer and have proof of this. On arrival the cottage, it was not open as promised and no key was left anywhere. We traveled to find a mobile signal to call the manager - a woman called "Janina". She told us she had not bothered because "we had not paid" and claimed she could not get a hold of us. This was complete lies because because she was provided with email, phone numbers home address etc - backed up in an email as proof.

When we explained we had paid, she said she would contact the cleaner to have the key given to us. She called us back 20 minutes later to say she couldn't find the cleaner and wasn't happy about coming to give us the key because she lived 25 minutes away. We explained to her we had arrived on an island with nowhere to stay then she agreed to come with the key. When she arrived she was extremely rude to us saying we were dishonest and hadn't paid. She then demanded that we would have to pay her £300 to be let in. We did not have £300 in cash with us but offered her what we had which was around £80. She point blank refused and told us to go to the nearest cash machine and she would only wait 10 minutes or she was going home. We explained to her that the only cash machine on this part of the island was not working as we had tried on arrival. She demanded that we drive to Tarbert to get the cash and she would give us 20 minutes - we simply could not believe this was happening. We drove to Tarbert and asked around a few businesses where we eventually got some money at the Hebridean Hotel, who were very nice to us.

When we returned with the money, she was pulled open my car door and started raising her voice at me and my wife. I tried to explain to her that we had the money and would like a receipt. She refused, so I said I would photograph her receiving the money. We then asked to speak with the actual owner and she refused point blank. She claimed the owner could not be contacted, yet - she said she had spoken with the owner was able to check the bank account we paid the money to? Then she started shouting at me and shoved me into my car then stormed off to her car. At this point her husband came over and I tried to explain to him that we couldn't believe this was happening, that we had the money and only wanted a receipt. He agreed to speak with her and calm her down. My wife went over with the money. The woman then said that she was not letting anyone in to the cottage that she did not know - which we simply could not believe. She knew we were on an island and there was no place to stay. She told her husband to get in the car then drove off - leaving us both outside the cottage.

I stress nowhere to stay because Harris is fully booked due to the annual Mod taking place for the entire week of our stay.

We were extremely upset by what had just happened. We could not fathom why this woman reacted this way to us. As we had paid in good faith and produced proof, we decided to report the matter to the Police. We are having to return from our holiday before it has even begun.

In the event of a rebuttal, the owners should note that we have all the appropriate evidence backing this up, plus a police reference number. In case anyone is thinking we would make this up and ruin a holiday.

This was our first visit to the island, and we joined our friends who were staying in this wonderful cottage. It is warm, cozy, inviting and perfect after a long day of hiking. We ate our meals sitting at the table overlooking the water. The incredibly well equipped kitchen made cooking/baking, serving and eating a pleasure. The beautifully tiled bathroom with heated floors is large and has both a bathtub and separate shower. The owner is as charismatic as is the cottage.

“Flawless - not a fault to be found!”

Seaside Cottage is quite simply perfect. The situation is breath-taking, with fantastic views of the sea and the mountains; and a local great northern diver to watch over breakfast. The cottage itself, honestly, is just wonderful. Nothing has been omitted: the crockery is charming and so is the tea cosy (ok, it's a small thing, but trust me, it IS!), the bathroom is the height of luxury, the kitchen is amazingly well-equipped (waking up to the smell of fresh bread thanks to the breadmaker is a first for a holiday cottage for us)...I could go on, but, in a nutshell, go there! You will love it. The island of Harris too is unbelievably beautiful, whatever the weather (and we had a bit of almost everything). The only disappointment was that it didn't snow, because then we might have got stuck there - bliss!
We want to go back: so I must be mad telling you all about it, but it isn't fair to the lovely owner (who even so kindly posted in something we'd left behind) not to!

“lovely cottage”
Reviewed 15 September 2015 for a stay in September 2015

a lovely cottage in a beautiful location. Very well equipped and extremely comfortable. The under floor heating in the bathroom is an extra bonus. We have stayed in a lot of cottages around the highlands and islands and this is definately one of the best . I would happily return and from the guest book it looks as if there are a lot of people who do exactly that.
